I need a new engine 2v or 3v

I have tried to search for this but can't find anything.

Well I got bad news today from my mechanic, my engine is locked up and I need a new one. I have a 2000 F250 Super Duty with of course a 6.8L V10. I have seen stuff on here about the 2v vs 3v engine. My mechanic says my engine is 2v. How can I make sure my engine is a 2v versus 3v can you just replace the original motor with a 3v engine with little to no other adjustment. I have seen a lot of information about the 3v engine on here and seen a couple for sale on here and wanted to know if I could use it and what the benefit would be. Also if anyone knows of one for sale let me know.

Your truck has the PI 2V. Putting in a 3V is not going to be a drop in deal, the shortblock is basically the same as the 2V but the heads up is completely different as is the pcm controlling it. Best off trying to find an 04'up 2V 6.8l then you know its a PI and has heads with the extra threads in the spark plug hole. (Some 03' MY has extra threads too)

3V

2V

2005 and up MODEL YEAR F-series trucks all have the 3-valve V10. The 2005 Excursion is a 2-valve.

2000-2004 MODEL YEAR F-series and all 2000-up E-series and all 2000-up Excursions are PI-head 2-valve.

1997-1999 (all) are non-PI head.

Somewhere after the start of the 2003 model year, they introduced the long-thread heads. It does NOT guarantee you will not spit a plug, but it greatly reduces the chances, it seems.

You can not bolt-in a 3-valve V10 into a chassis that came with the 2-valve. It will "bolt-in" but the electronics will not, and there was one person who did put a 3-valve in place of a 2-valve, but it involved a throttle body adapter, and they (as far as I know) never solved a check-engine light being on for the cam sensor. (this person was also the one I recently alluded to, in that they came here, asking for lots of advice, and then proceeded to try to sell a kit without being a sponsor)

EASY WAY TO TELL THE 2-valve versus the 3-valve:

The 2-valve has plastic valve covers, and an ALUMINUM intake upper.

The 3-valve has aluminum valve covers, and a PLASTIC intake.
