2005 F250 question: Fuel Mileage
I just acquiered a 2005 F250 extended can short bed truck with lariet interior. it is four wheel drive with the 5.4 liter gas and automatic trans. My question is, what are other folks getting for fuel mileage on trucks like this one? Also, i was looking into a cold air intake. K&N advertise 20hp. But how much fuel mileage should i expect to gain with a cold air intake.

Not much highway empty driving but I'm getting around 14mpg very light city. Towing our 8500 lb mid profile 5th wheel 60-65mph, we squeezed 8.5 average out of our first 1250 mile trip. It's a heavy truck and not very aerodynamic and I hope Ford never changes it but I can see most folks getting 11-12 city with it. The drive by wire loud peddle is pretty unresponsive until you get past 1/2 peddle which helps, I like it that way and I'm sure Ford programmed it that way for that reason along with emissions. My previous 3/4 ton Hemi Ram was the same way. If I feline-footed around town, I could squeeze 14-15 out of it. The F250 is a whole lotta more truck!

I don't know how you guys do it but I get only around 8-9 mpg EMPTY on my 03 f-250 5.4. I thought that thing in overhead console is kidding about the mileage, but it's not. It's really bad. I changed the 02 sensors, all filters, cleaned all other sensors but it still sucks. I'm just browsing this forum looking for some tips. If you have any ideas, let me know...

You should be able to get 13 MPG or better per tank, depending on your driving style. Just avoid the jack-rabbit starts and drive her easy.
I usually get around 14-15 MPG average per tankful when not on a road trip, but a lot of the driving where I live is two lane rural roads. I've managed 18 MPG when on a road trip, but that was flat straight freeway with a reported 40 MPH tailwind.

straight six - I have a 06 Ford F250 super cab. I get about 12.5 to 13 miles on my truck. When I purchased my truck I got the fuel injection clean, changed fuel filter and changed all the fluids (synthetic). With the 06 model it also has a exterior transmission filter that need to be changed. I don't know about the 05 models. Just check and see if you have one.
I also changed the OEM air filter to a K&N filter. I didn't get the whole unit changed, just the filter. It works good for my truck. You might want to check and see if you need to change the spark plugs. Just these small things might help get you better gas milage.
good luck

My '05 Crew/5.4/auto/4wd w/A.R.E. cap on and stock exterior got 11.0 if I was lucky. Losing the cap actually added 0.5 bringing it to about 11.5 combined. It seems the weight of the cap outweighed the aerodynamics. Now with the visor and west coast mirrors on sans the cap I get a combined 9.3 to 9.5 mpg.
The next addition will be a slanted soft top over the bed. Kind of like a tonneau cover that will go from the rear top of the cab. If it works out well for mileage I'll post it.

Citypol86 -how do you like the 5.4 in your crewcab powerwise? I'm looking to purchase a superduty soon and have driven a V10 Crew which had plenty of power, and I've drive a Supercab 5.4 V8 which wasn't really lacking either-but didn't have the pep of the V10 (obviously). We really want a crewcab and I've found some nice deals on 5.4's but am kinda wondering if it will be underpowered in that big of a truck- the truck will also be used to plow so I'm taking that into consideration as well. Thanks
