Arrow Thread Closed THANKS f.t.e members

OK guys i decided to put stacks on my truck , Yes its not a Diesel engine but , either way it will sound nice and look cool as hell right ?? anyway...

I need recommendations on what to buy and how to install it..

Truck usage 68 % street 20 % off road and 11 % eye catcher and 1 % Hick "* wink * "
anyway I currenty use Doug headers dual in to single 6 inch pipe .

Also any other advice would ne nice,,
I am rebuilding my top half of my engine middle of FEB thanks to F.T.E members helping me pick out my parts.. i will be posting a link and pics during the rebuild.. so thank you..

*also a side note i understand the bed and cab rock when you off road . so how to you install stacks with out them bending.. if there comeing out of the corners of the bed ?

thanks
JAYSON

can come up threw the middle torwards the passenger side and split it with a 6"-8" pipe what ever size u plan on using

but when u come up threw the bed floor cut the hole about 1.5" wider than the pipe so if u go with 6" cut the hole to about 8"-8.5" coz u dont mount the stacks to the bed they are kinda free floating the last place they will be mounted is where the pipe 90*s up threw the bed floor

the ehaust will allow it to flex a little if forced but when 4wheeling i dont think it will contact the bed

I would check out the diesel mags online (Diesel Power or 8 Lug) and search for stacks.. I know they have done tech articles on installing stack kits... but gettin into stacks cheap may not be sooooo easy..

i wouldnt go any bigger than 8" so 6"

lol there is a guy here where i live with a old f350 like 60s model flatbed it looks really good it has a big block in it idk if its a 429 or 460 but being that old its prolly 429 he has 2 8" stacks on it and it sounds really good and its loud a effin a....

is ur truck emmission controlled? if not lose the cat. if it is then u can try finding a highflow that size or cutting that one.... oh jesus i said to modify a cat.... here come the you cant do that.... lol

but if its only inspected to c that is has one then u can do this it wont pass emmisions coz ur taken that restrictive junk out lol

does it seriously stck that far back tho coz thats like 50 ft. lol wait take a pick of the exhaust from the cat forward u may be able to move it more towards the engine coz i think the bed cap on the front of the bed is like 2"s so set off it about 1.5-2"s thats 4"s behind the front of the bed from the front....

dont pay attention to the size this is just to show u what i was talking about but this hard mounts to the bed and flexes at the exhast pipe down low wich will work the best

these are 5" aussies i like this truck and i think with ur truck being as big as it is 6"s will look perfect

Nothing wrong with stacks on a gasser. The stacks currently on my diesel were on my 85 F-250 with a 460. True duals, no cats or mufflers and it sounded AWESOME! I wish my straight piped diesel was half as loud, but the turbo kills it...at least I get to hear the turbo whistle though.

On my 460, I had each pipe cross under the frame to run along the outside. There is plenty of room out there to add mufflers or some aftermarket cats. You could even install some header flanges to make them removable to put a straight pipe in place. The stacks were bolted to the bed and plates were welded to the bottom so the pipes could be attached with header style flanges. There was a section of flex pipe on each side as well. The stacks were bolted to the floor and front of the bed with welded on tabs. Never had any problems off road with cracking or breaking. Here are a few pics.

With my diesel, it's a 4" pipe, with a section of flex pipe right before the 90* bend up into the bed. Then a 4" Y-pipe into the 5" stacks which are bolted to the bedsides with pipe clamps. Been off road once with no problems with this setup either.

You will want flex pipe in there somewhere to help absorb the twisting. If you use two smaller pipes, the steel braided flex pipe is a bit more expensive but isn't likely to leak. I'm have only seen the larger flex pipe available in the standard setup which is more prone to leakage over time.

I had my 85 done long ago before stack kits were available and hardly anybody was using them. It cost me $160 for the stacks on ebay and then $700 to have them installed. My diesel cost me $500 to get everything from the down pipe to the stacks fabbed up.

The best/cheapest route for you would probably be to run your headers into a 4" straight pipe and then find a stack kit on ebay($250-$350) along with some stacks and have it done similar to a diesel setup. In my opinion anything bigger than a 6" stack looks a little goofy, although one 8" stack in the middle of the bed doesn't look to bad. With a 4" pipe, you will be able to get a cat and muffler to put in there, with the header flanges. That way when inspection times comes, you unbolt the straight pipe, and bolt in your cat/muffler. Go take your test, go home and remove them. I had that setup on a Mercury once, it worked very well.
