82ford302 is starting off with a positive reputation.
302 swap in 79 F150 4x4

just recently aquired a 79 f150 4x4 that originally had a 300 I6 and 4 speed in it. well the 6 cylinder engine was removed but the transmission and transfercase is still in the truck. i know the 302/351W motors will bolt to the transmission.

but my questions are:

1) what motor mounts or frame perches would i need to put the 302 in there?

2) what flywheel and clutch combination would i have to use since the 302 is from a 86 lincoln continental with the 50oz balance crank?

dont waste your time on the 302. drop another 300-6 in there. its an awsome motor and more suited for a 4wd truck. not to mention you wont have to change a thing.

the 302 was never offered in that truck so either making custom frame mounts or trying to make 2wd frame mounts work could be a chore. then exhaust will need changed, radiator will need changed etc..

Well, yes 302's were offered in these trucks, but the 351w wasn't. I have a 300 in mine right now and it is a good motor, I am swapping to a 351w in the future cause I am building a play toy. I wouldn't suggest a 302, the 300 has less HP but around the same TQ, and the 351w has more of both. You can use 302 motor mounts on the 302/351, and you would need to get the motor purches from a 4x4 that had a 351m/400 in it. As for the clutch, you can run whatever you want.

the 302 was not offered in a 4wd ford during these years accept for maybe the F100 model and early broncos. so i am not sure where your getting that info (not trying to be rude). if you saw one it was probably a transplant. also the motor purches from a 351m/400 wont work for a 302/351w due to the blocks being different.

you will only find 300-6, 351m and 400's. Thats it for the 78-79 model years. prior to that from 73-77.5 you got those along with 360 & 390's being offered but again no 302 or 351w. i know because i owned a 73.

Hmmmmm, I could have sworn a 302 was available in the 4x4's, wouldn't be the first time I have been wrong (ask my wife)! I remember a guy doing a swap that went from a 351m to a 351w and he used the same perches. The best bet would to be to seach in here and in the 73-79 section.

and we all know Ford does odd combos sometimes also. i think all wifes are like that, honestly i would rather be wrong because there is less accountability/responsibility ya know LOL
