08 F250 Went into Limp Mode - ideas?

Drove down to the store this morning - everything normal. Got back in the truck and it wouldn't start at first. After 4 times, it fired up and it immediately displayed the WRENCH in the drivers information center. So, it is in limp mode. Stayed that way all the way home.

Ideas as to what this means, the fix required, etc?

could be a number of things..my initial though is that it would not start right away. So why? Cold and fuel geling maybe.

Drove it home after it started - about 10 miles. It stayed in limp mode the whole time. It is cold outside (about 20), but I had the heater plugged in all night. I also always run the cetane booster in the fuel. It will start up but it remains in limp mode.

so it starts better now though? as normally would?

You could try to disconnect both batteries, wait 15 mins and re-connect and see if that does something to reset it.

But this may be something else, if you have the time, might want to just have the dealer put the computer on it and read the fault code.

After I got it home and parked it, I immediately restarted it and it started normal although still in limp mode. I will let it cool off and try it again, and might as well disconnect the batteries for 15 minutes and then see if it resets or not.

Disconnected batteries for a little while then hooked both back up and restarted the truck. Started without a problem, but is still showing the dreaded WRENCH in the display. Will have to take it to the dealership tomorrow. It has just over 30k miles on it, so still under warranty. I also have an extended warranty on it, so hopefully they can at least get me in a rental if they have to keep the truck for repair.

Will do - I can't get it to the dealership until late tomorrow afternoon after I get off work. Hopefully they can run a quick scan and see what the code is at least.

Maybe autozone can read it and clear it...at least you will know what caused it and if it is something major then take it in. So at least now you can drive the thing.

If you had no symptoms before it's probably a bad sensor somewhere giving a reading out of spec and causing the PCM to protect the motor from damage. Too bad you don't have a code reader.

Thats my thought too, especially since another member just had the same unexpected "no start" issue and it was due to a bad sensor on the DPF.

Tech at local dealership ran the code and it was the fuel pump. He tried a temporary repair but it did not work. Had to order new fuel pump. Since it was already after 5:00 p.m., they won't have one in until Wednesday. Dealership gave me a loaner car at no cost. I can't complain about how they treated me, but am concerned seeing how many fuel pumps have gone out on these trucks at low miles. Mine has just over 30k miles.

I remember a post or two about the high pressure fuel pumps being a problem but you are the first one in a while. Have to do a search.....
