Greetings,
I have a 1950 F-1 that I just put a 302 in. The new headers will not allow the battery to be placed in the original battery box and location. There is not suffiecient room on the firewall either.

Any suggestions???

I used a sealed Exide Orbital battery behind the seat. I put a black cover over it and it looks good. The ranger seat just clears it when the seat is all the way back.

 

1. Behind / in-between the seats with a sealed type (like a no name Optima)

2. In the box in a box.

3. Some kind of frame drop down like the FAT FENDER people use.

 

On my 49 I recessed the battery into the bed floor.

I'm relocating mine under the passenger side and behind the tranny crossmember. I'm going to use a drop down battery box and sell for about $130.

 

Why will it not fit on the firewall? Upper passenger side just under the hood?

I can't imagine headers which might impact a battery box on the firewall. You may not be able to use the original battery box but there should be ample space to mount the battery on the firewall. I'm using a 302 in my 49 F-1 and that's where mine is going...

 

Thanks for your reply. The headers impact it on the left side where the original battery and battery box were located. I tried on the right side firewall but it interferes with my heater hoses. I already have the heater located and don't want to cut new holes in the firewall and firewall cover. I think I will go with a drop down battery box and locate it on the right side frame just behind the rear transmission mount.

Here is another easy to get to location. Fender hides it and with a simple rubber mud flat in front of it you can not see it and it will also keep some of the road grime off of it. And with the tire turned left it can come out or you just pull the tire every 5-8yrs for a new one if needed.

Hmmm! If your heater tubes come out of the firewall in the original locations, you should have just barely enough room to put the battery box above them - like 3/4 inch. It's tight, but do-able. The top of my battery is about 3/4 inch below my hood when closed. But it fits.

My picture isn't as good as Julie's but this one clearly shows the heater hoses under the battery box. This is my other truck which is running a SBC...

 

Mines a BBF (FE 390) and I don't see how it could get much tighter in there than it is.

 

I agree, there is tons of room on the firewall. I have a 500ci Caddy in my 49 and there is plenty of room on the passenger side upper firewall for a battery.


I removed the heater hoses. I'll probably run them through the side of the cab to keep things clean (when and if I install a heater). Once I get my fuel injection up andrunning I'll get rid of the fuel filter on the firewall as well.
