Oil leak at filter?!

Yes, I did make sure the old seal was with the old one, and the new one was seated and oiled properly.
I thought the same, possibly some debris settling on the seal as it was being installed, causing a void for the oil to come out. I eliminated that thought after I drained and reinstalled the second time.
I agree that I will first try the obvious, and get a replacement filter. It is my first order of business when the parts supply opens today.
It is typical that has to happen on one of the coldest days of the year....
I checked some of the other oil leak posts before posting yesterday, and again today, and the oil is only in the oil filter mounting area, not above, which eliminates the HPOP leak.
