1989 F700 429 factory emissions equipment

After looking at the engine in the truck (89 F700) and finding no chapter about smog pumps, etc in the actual 1989 Ford shop manual I was wondering if all came with two pumps and a lot of hoses running here and there?

It came without a CAT per the exploded view of the exhaust system so I was just wondering perhaps the engine was a replacement from something smaller than a Class 6 truck where emission laws required CAT's and all the emission stuff. The dash is showing 144K miles and after 400 miles it seems solid and is not going to use much oil at all. That would be more like 200K miles if it was in a pick up plus they would have been harder miles.

One smog pump locked up at some point in the past and they put on a shorter belt required if no pump was used. The other pump is still spinning.

I am fine with or without the emissions package but would be more inclined to remove it if it was not stock when new. It is use as a farm truck is not that great plus a step ladder is required for me to reach the engine to work on it.

Thanks

The emissions package you described was indeed a stock item. While the cats are not obvious I have seen them incorporated in the Y pipe assembly (sic) 89 F250 460. I deleted the entire smog system and plug the return lines running up from the exhaust. the truck runs better with out the set up. if you state does not have these wonderful smog laws. I recommend removing the smog pump as they will lock up at the most inopportune times.

Thanks. I do not have a Y pipe but two inlets into the muffer. I am guess no CAT is due to being a Class 6 truck instead of a passenger vehicle?

I checked the beltless smog pump and it is in fact locked up or would lock up if spinning for a few minutes. All the hoses makes it a pain to get to the oil filler.

Performace is not a major concern as long as it will start, run, stop and dumb when I ask it to do so but I would like for the engine to look more neat.

The other smog pump bracket has a belt adjusting feature so I would need a pulley still in place of the pump or some way to adjust it if it drives other things as well. The PS pump may run off of that same belt. The Lucas-Griling pump on the right side of the engine may have its own drive belt since it is required for the braking system and parking brake function.

Gale,

I would imagine that it came with those pumps but that if you wanted to get rid of them you could use an alternator bracket and adjuster from a '70's Ford or Lincoln automotive application to clean up the engine bay.
