70's Bed Question

I'm selling some parts off a parts truck I have and came across a question. A prospective buyer told me that the 73-76 frames are different than the 78-79 so the beds mount in a different place. I also had one tell me that the mounting holes are different in the 2wd vs 4wd. I'm not well schooled in those years, so can anyone tell me if either of these statements are correct? Thanks.

Dont take it as gospel.....but.......I doubt Ford would have disrupted the production process with variations like that, I would say there is no diff. between 2wd and 4wd frames, only the options mounted to them.........Someone correct me please if wrong.

That was my thought, but they seemed convinced. But we all know that doesn't always make it true!

You are right! The 73-76 mounting holes are different than the 78-79 frames. The 4X4 frames are 37" wide and the 2X4 frames are 34" after 76.

Thanks Don,

How wide are the 2x4 frames and 4x4 frames from 73-76. I don't want to sell someone a bed that won't work for them. I have a 76 2x4 bed.

The changeover occurred in late 76 for the 4X4 frames. If you have the 76 box off the frame you could measure the bolt holes to determine which width it is.

FWIW, the cabs and front ends will ALL interchange from 67-76! The cabs are longer after 72, but will still fit, but the beds are mounted differently.

Thanks Don, that clears that up for me.
