01 Sport Trac 4WD won't Engage

Hi,

I have an 01 Sport Trac 4.0 V6, 4X4. When I flip the switch to go into 4WD, nothing happens. No noise, no clicks, no lights on dash, and ultimately no 4 wheel drive.

Given that the absolutely nothing is happening, my gut feeling is that it is the Transfer Case actuator that is behind the dash. Before I go out and start buying parts, has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, how dificult is it to swap the actuator?

The truck has 200K miles on it, I got it with 40K 6 years ago, I haven't had need for the 4 wheel drive in the past 4 years (120K est.) Which as me thinking this is more an electrical issue than it is a transfer case issue.

Any suggestions you have on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ncranchero... I finally had some good weather on the weekend to pull the panel and take a look. After playing with the connections I got the 4WD High to engage. This morning was a bit rainy, so I figured I'd give the 4WD a workout and use it on the way to work. It worked fine until I got to the office. Once I hit the parking lot, I dropped into 2WD for easier parking. After that it would not go back into 4WD. I pulled the panel, checked the connections, but nothing would happen, back to like the original problem.

There are a couple of connectors behind that kick panel and I have confirmed they are all secure. Anywhere else I should be looking?

That may still be the problem area. Get some dielectric grease from the parts store and put it on the connections. Be real careful using 4WD on non-slick pavement, especially turning!
