Daughter has been driving the 92 F150 XLT S/C w/351 & auto for the past week. She called me yesterday and said the truck quit pulling itself. I went out and pulled her back in.
Sure enough, when I put it in D and gave it a little gas, I can hear some thing trying to turn but I got a distintive kind of a burning smell. Now I don't know squat 'bout transmissions but I know enough to understand this is gonna cost me a lil chunk.
I really can't complain, I bought the truck back in 95 and other than routine stuff...she's gone 217K miles. I bought the truck up in Brunswick Maine and never got her stuck in all the miles we drove up there...and it's a 2 wheel drive truck.
Any recommendations on where to start looking for a replacement (no, I don't think I'll buy a new or reman) used tranny, drop me a reply.
Joe

About the only choices you have is to take a chance from and junk yard, New from stealer, Remaned, tranny shop or find a junker on the side of the road and buy it and pull the tranny.
The fact is I would go with a remaned. I comes with a warranty, you only have to pull the tranny once (most of the time), the price is about the same as a tranny shop rebuild and if you do the R&R your self you save that cost.
Didja check the fluid level? That would be a nice freebie if it was just low With that kind of mileage and burning smell though I'd say you're in the market for a tranny.
There might be a place similar to this in the Beckley or Charleston areas but in Fairmont there's a place called Pick-up City. They're a car/truck "recycler". Basically a very well organized salvage yard that's in a warehouse. They have the parts removed and crated up already usually. I haven't personally bought a tranny or engine from them, but I know people who have and they were happy with the price and the product.
Also, I don't know how far this extends (distance-wise) but they offer "free regional delivery" to transmission shops, car dealers, garages, etc. So, if you have a trans shop doing the work, they might deliver it to the shop for free...
Thanks for the link Jas...they didn't have anything in stock. I'll just hafta keep checking with them.
BTW, I love that avitar...looks like yer truck is smilin'!!!

Thanks Steve, I'll give them a try. First, I've learned that I need to learn more about this tranny/set-up. When I went to the website above, it asked for the vehicle info...year, model, make, engine, etc...well it turns out there are three or four additional things that can determine the correct tranny.
I'll keep ya'll informed.

Joe you still never said if you checked the transmission fluid level. It could just be too low to make her move. What color is the fluid? If it is not red and is rusty and smells burnt you might just have to have it changed especially with that kind of mileage. Check the fluid level first.

Sorry Dude...The Grandson has already asked for it...and of course Papa said yes.
Looks like it's gonna be a low fluid issue...no tranny needed after all!

I'd take that one as a freebie!
You'll hafta keep an eye on it though. Depending on how long it was driven with low fluid, it could be on the path to failure.
How low was it? Could you see any on the dipstick? If so, was it still red and did it smell burnt? Might be a good idea to get it flushed and a new filter.
Dude....sawdust? For real? I've never heard of that fix!
I'm gonna drag her home, pull the pan, replace the filter and the fluid and lets see what I get.

I in no way advise or condone the use of brake fluid and or sawdust in a transmission. And me doing this to an 88 F-250 i no longer have is pure hearsay.
