Hi again,

I tryed to change my brake rotors (with auto hubs), and could not take them out.

I removed brake calipers, but could not take out rotors. Is there something to know about it ?

You need to remove the hubs, then remove the spindle nuts and lock rings. Only after these are out can you get the rotor assembly to come off the steering knuckle. You can then drive the wheel studs out of the hub and rotor assembly and replace the rotor. And as all the really good service manuals say, "Install is the reverse of removal". Just take care not to over or under torque the spindle nut/lock rings lest you end up with terrible wheel wobble (Manifests itself initially as terrible negative camber after installation) or so much pressure on the wheel bearings that you burn them up.

Yes, what Lisle tools calls a Dana axle nut removal tool. It is a large diameter piece of tubing with four small points projecting down into the slots in the spindle nuts. Friend of mine fabricated one years ago before anyone but Spicer/Dana made such a tool.

 

my 89 ha dthe atuo lockin hubs and needed it..my 96 has SuperW manual and i have no clue whats involeed with removing them

 

It should be the same. There was a period of time where the spindle nuts were actually hex nuts but I couldn't tell you when or even if they were specific to any particular models.

 

You need to remove the auto hubs first, and if you got the 3 screw variety, that's a challenge in itself.

 

The retaining nut on a '96 should be a 2.5" hex. I got mine at AutoZone, 13$ I think. It's a cheap stamped thing but it did the job twice, which is all I needed when I changed over to manuals. It looks more like an old school bell that's lost its handle than a socket.

First remove the outer hub cap that has the three torx screws. Underneath that you'll need to pull out a clip that sits in a groove to remove the hub body. After that there are a few washers and then a locking clip that is a half circle with a leg that sticks into the locknut. I got a set of picks from Advance Auto that help BIG TIME with this job; dental picks would work too.

 

yea dont forget the half circle clip, there kinda hard to see if theres allot of grease.

 

Anyone know where I can find a diagram of brake rotor removal for an '87 Bronco (Manual hub)?
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a parts diagram must be worth ten thousand.

 

Oh I've had some good memories changing out my rotors lol.... when you take of the first cap you should be able to see the lock ring, can be a pain to get off if they havent been removed in a while. When you take out the internals I'd put a rag down and lay them in order of removal. Dont forget to re-pack with grease!
