Questions about good sounding exhaust.

I have a 1991 F-150 with a 5.0 L V8. On the exhaust right now, there is the stock cat, no muffler, and the pipe is about 2.5 inch. I want a louder sound and was planning on getting a high flow cat, leaving the muffler off, and using 3" pipe and 3.5" chrome tips. Would this be a good sounding system? And if so, which brand of a cat would you recommend?

Ive used ebays high flow cats and they have worked wonders. 3" is prob a bit too big for a stock 5.0, id leave the 2.5. If you really want some sound, id get a set of long tubes, and get a nice dual system made.

You'll probably need a muffler once you get rid of the stock cats. I have used Magnaflow cats with good results.

I'm not a pro on exhaust or anything, but why would I need a muffler if I got a aftermarket cat?

You dont, sometimes with the added flow of the high flow cat, the sound can get alot louder.

Well ok.. you might not need a muffler but you may like one after you remove the big cork that is the stock cats.

I have a 95 f150 with the 351w with the stock cat. on hollowed out with no muffler dualed out in the back and its louds but not obnoiouxsly loud. As far as getting a sound violation it depends on where you live but even in really strict areas what they pull you over for isnt it for really being loud but the popping (thats what a cop pulled my buddy over for but he has a I6). Do NOT run any bigger then 2.5" exhaust on your 5.0 because even that is a pretty big pipe to have it dualed it and is basically like running no exhaust. The smaller diameter exhaust will create the popping. I think you'll be very happy with just a cat. on it will be loud but not obnoxoiusly loud inless you really get on it. I dont see the point in spending the money on a muffler to restrict the exhaust and make it more quite when you dont need it. But just some FYI if you drive in the city or in neighborhoods try to stay off the gas cause it can upset people...

If you have a high flow cat you will want some type of muffler. I like straight through mufflers like Magnaflow, Dynomax, and glasspacks. Straight pipes sound like crap and if you just have a high flow cat, it will sound very similar. It will also attract attention from the police and **** off your neighbors. I think the sound you would probably like would be the high flow cat and a short glasspack.

My 351 has a stock cat and duals with no mufflers, too loud for me personally but it is a stock 351 F250, doesn't need to sound fast when it isn't going anywhere quickly

I am considering ditching the giant stock cat and getting a muffler though.

Sounds like you want a medium length glasspack. Magnaflow if you want to spend the money.
