Question 351W to 460

How difficult to go from a 351W to 460? I have a 1990 F-350 crew cab with a 351W fuel injected, 5 speed manual, 4wd. What will be involved?

Many thanks

you will need a big block 4wd tranny, different engine stands that bolt to the frame, different wiring harness and computer. if you can find a donor truck with these parts that will greatly help your swap.

Thank you Sir. Any suggestions as to transmission? Am partial to standards. Would I be just as well off putting money into the 351 to get more power?

Yes.. but it really depends what you use the truck for. If it does a lot of heavy hauling then go for the engine swap, the 5.8 can be significantly improved relatively easy but it isn't going to produce big block torque without a stroker kit and a pile of money.

well in that case i would plan on a gear change. this will give you your biggest impact performance wise. for running 38's figure at least a 5.13 gear set front/rear. you could probably go with these gears now and be ahead of the game. Which tranny do you have? if you have the E4OD then you for sure want to regear before you go to that size of tire because even with the 4.10's it will kill the tranny.

upgrading the exhaust is a great start and does help the 5.8

Current Transmission

five speed, HD overdrive Transmission. From the dark recesses of my brain, a Borg/Warner 1345 (1356?) seems familiar
