Brake problem

I have an 04 350 SD 6.0 and have noticed that occasionaly when i brake i have firm pedal feel and then there is like a 1-2 second gap when my brake pedal goes soft and there seems to be no braking going on. I took it to Les Schwab and they are going to check it out tomorrow and that it might be the vacuum pump or the master cylinder. Does anyone have any idea how much this might cost to fix. Also i have noticed that the ABS light turns on and stays on when i start the truck, then the next time it won't. Any insight would be much appreciated !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Frits

I vote for the master cylinder. Your brakes are hydroboost, not vacuum, but ole' Les wouldn't know that over the phone. Could be power steering system related though. Hope not.

Thanks for the info. The fact that they don't know what they are talking about really doesn't give me much confidence in them.
