Stuck in 4x4 but truck doesn’t know it

ok, so back story is, I went to pull my truck out of the snow bank from snowmageddon 18. I locked the hubs in and took the switch to 4x4 high. When I did this I heard a loud metallic snap and bang. I got out looked everywhere for something broken, searched the ground underneath, nothing. I figured it had just sieved from the cold (-5 wind chill) and broke free. So I start to drive out and have no 4x4 (dash light says 4x4) and I hear a thumbprint under the truck when going forward but not backwards. I look again and see the knuckle had broken free from the transfer case/transmission assembly. I rebooted the 3 ears that were left and drove it around the block to see how it would hold up. Alls well. So I park and put in back in 4x2 and the light goes off so naturally I assume it’s back in 4x2 and I unlocked the hubs) Now I have to go to work and at around 35 mph it shakes and sounds like a freight train underneath. After playing around with it at work I realize I’m still in 4x4 but the truck doesn’t register that it’s in 4c4. How do I get back to 4x2 and disengage the front drive shaft so I can drive it without concern of more **** breaking until I can order parts to replace the front drive shaft and knuckle?

Specify the vehicle, different models might have different solutions.
Can't you just remove the front driveshaft?

By knuckle broke? I assume you mean the ujoint at the transfer case?

Is it stuck in 4x4 because of the transfer case...or because of malfunctioning hubs?

As alloro said...removing front drive shaft is prob your best and safest bet if in fact the ujoint at transfer case is what broke.
