When there just isn't ANY room for your exhaust...

So I will admit, the preplanning on the exhaust was VERY bad... I ACTUALLY thought that, "Oh I'll get all my suspension, drivelines and what not in and figure the exhaust out later. Once I had my 3 link and everything in... I thought about my exhaust and about needed to change my pants... So I decided I was going to just push it threw the frame behind one of the body mounts, and run it that way. Well yesterday was the big day and I cut a VERY LARGE hole in one of the smallest parts of my frame. needless to say I had to talk myself into the cut, and was sweating it the whole way! Here's some pics of the progress so far.

hm. Couldn't you have just dumped it somewhere before there? or run fenderwell headers?

I'm sure it will be strong enough with all the plating, but it seems like there could have been a better solution to this. Looking forward to see the progress though..

If it were me I would have just gone with fenderwheel headers. That huge hole in your frame just looks like one big weak spot. Just my thoughts not trying to critisize.

i would have had a set of fenderwells made if none were available off the shelf. no turning back now though. im sure some people in the know will chime in eventually. im sure it will be fine.

Damn, that took some *****. I like it though. Did you put the tube in square or angled towards the back?

x2. Man I just don't know if i'd be able to do it. But you seem to have reinforced the hole a little bit. I'm sure it will work out great.

Glad you're finally getting something done. Is the 460 in?

There honestly wasn't enough room here for even a muffler, so here was no chance to dump it down, besides mabey a turn down after a set of headers... and the tickets and noise would get old after awhile! I thought about fender headers, but I'm still running the small block... and will have to for awhile, and I've seen this done on hot rods before so I just decided to do an over built version of it. the wall size on that pipe is almost 1/4 inch, and in the second pic you can see the heat marks from the fish plate i welded in on the back side, plus boxing should make it atleast as strong as the stock frame there. I'm not sure if it took *****, or sheer ignorance, but there is a hole there now and no turning back! But I am glad I'll be able to keep my exhaust up tight, and out of my tires when I stuff them in the fenders!

Hot rods tend to start alot of trends. Heck most of the vehicle modifications started from hot rods in one way or another. There are alot of things that I plan to do that come from the hot rods and lowered truck groups.

Better do both sides if you havn't.

...then when the frame breaks its an even break on both sides.

Yea, it's getting the same thing on the other side. The passanger side is going to be tighter for sure but I'll figure something out. It's getting dual 3 inch exhaust on it with 40 series flowmasters... Not that it needs exhaust that big, but with a pickup this tall and obnoxious I figured really...why not?

Could you post up some pictures of the space betweem the frame rails? I just find it really hard to beleave cutting a huge hole in the frame was the only way to go.. Could you have just went under the frame infront of where you cut the hole?
