I have an 85 460 with the 85 starter on it. I want to put one of the newer model High torque starters on it. I know that on 5.0 liter engines you can put a newer high torque starters on an older model but you have to rewire some stuff. Can you do this with a 460 as well. What all do you have to do? What year starter do I have to have? Where can I find a wiring diagram to do this?

Should wire up just like your existing starter.

 

What you have here is aftermarket starters, isn't it? What I'm looking for is an OEM style starter. Didn't they make a High torque oem starter in the later models? The reason is I could get one a lot cheaper.

 

Yes they did. And yes you can. what you have to do is run your current starter wire down just like your current setup adn then you run a jumper wire from the big terminal that hooks into over to the S terminal on the solenoid on the high torque unit and your good to go.

 

What year starter do I need to get? Is this basically the same wiring setup as switching from the old style starter to a new style on a 302? What size wire do I need to use?

 

My question is "WHY?" I've had 12.5 to 1 compression motors and as long as the starter and battery were healthy and the cables were a heavy enough gauge, I never had a problem. So why would you need a high torque starter on a low compression motor?

 

Bear read post 3 he says he can get it cheaper. and they do work good.

Answer to your question muskrat 92 or later F350 with a 7.5 is your application to ask for.

Your exactly right here monsterbaby! I've done this before on my 302 vehicles & it works great & saves your battery life as well! I guess the only question left here to answer is what size wire to make & where do I get a wiring diagram to do this because I lost the one that I had before to do it to a 302.

 

it doesn't take a large wire for the jumper. 12ga is overkill but what I usually use personally
