I doubt if it matters what you use in the T case, it's just a few parts that don't get used much anyway.

That's right, Brent! Heck, we can probably run that thing without oil for awhile just like the engine!

Seriously guys, this is almost a two-year-old thread!

I'm not the one that bumped it up and all you non mechanics freak out at the slightest thing because you have little or no experience with vehicles.

I never accused you of doing it. I was poking some lighthearted fun at a debate we had over a year ago...no offense was intensed and I honestly don't appreciate your comment.

No offense?.....yea right. I only ran my engine for 10 seconds to get the truck away from the pavement so I could finish the oil change and you blew it all out of proportion like it was going to throw a rod or something.

And since the original topic has to do with transfer case oil, that's where it will remain from this point forward. The rest is water under the bridge and if it needs to be discussed any further, PMs may be utilized.

Good , it's not going to benefit from any special blends of atf, it's just a T-case, not an auto trans which is what I tried to say a while back before getting blasted.

So do you want the information or not?

The interweb seems to indicate that Ford "transfer case fluid" is basically dexron III.

The NV271/273 was designed for dex III. Mercon V and the similar Dex VI are not very seal friendly. If you put either in a NV271/273 it will be fine internally but the seals won't hold up and it will leak. I wasn't seal guy so I don't remember which elastomers like dex VI type fluid and which don't. My advice is that although it's allegedly backward compatible I wouln't put either Dexron VI or Mercon V in anything unless it came with it.

All that stuff was for auto trans so how could if not be seal friendly. It's just a simple gearbox, what is the big deal?
