97 ranger stepside leaking gas

I went out to my truck this morning and noticed a puddle under it, but it had not rained. Lookin under it I see that gas is slowly leaking out from the gas tank, not sure from where. I know I had a problem with the gas filler tube and the mechanic at the time could not find a replacement and rigged it. Does someone have a link to a replacement filler neck?

www.partsguyed.com

I had to replace this on my 97 ranger as well. They make aftermarket parts for the straight side, but not flare side.

I know it is expensive, but I couldn't find another cheaper alternative.

I should add that if you have a slow constant leak at standstill, its probably not the filler tube, that should only leak while the car moves, and gas is sloshing back and forth.

Also the link didn't quite work, you'll have to navigate throught the site...

+1 on cheapos analysis of it being a hole in the tank or a fuel line maybe around the fuel filter. get down there and poke around.

This does not sound like the filler neck, though they do rot out. Your fuel tank should be plastic so I don't think it is the candidate. Fuel filter is not far from the outer side of the tank on he flareside so a puddle in that area could also suggest a problem there and it is my first suspect. BTW, the filler neck for the stepside is available, but only from Ford. There are aftermarket ones only for the regular bed. This forum at one point had a dealer sponsor whose price was much less than going to your local dealer. Still not cheap. If you ever have to tackle that and drop the tank, do yourself a favor and get new straps. Those you can get aftermarket and Rockauto has some that are a good buy.

I poked my head under it and the gas looks like it is dripping right off of the bottom of the tank as though it is leaking on the top or side. I didn't see anything on the fuel line nor filter.

The filler neck had a temp repair and I would just hope to fix it if/when we drop the tank. I found this guy just before I left phoenix and he will ship it to indiana for $25. I will let you know if it works and how well.

Ranger failed emissions ?? (gas filler hose problem)

If you filled up your tank or it was pretty full right before you saw the puddle perhaps some leaked out the rotted filler neck and caused the issue. If you can get a guy to install a steel version that seals right so it won't make the computer throw a code that would be a real problem solver. He just has to be able to fit one to the smaller flareside version. Get new straps before you drop the tank, the old ones will probably crumble apart when you pull them off.

Let us know how it works, looks like a cheap alternative to buying the ford part.

Also, I agree, I just took off the bed, BUT, replacing the bolts and clips are expensive, $20 per set. I had to grind off one of the bolts holding the bed on...
