Exterior exhaust smell overwhelming
I have noticed a strong exhaust smell outside of the truck. I can be inside and come to a stop and roll my window down and smell a strong exhaust smell. And obviously if I am idling, the smell is very strong and it never used to smell this bad. I removed the programmer to see if something was causing over fueling or something but no change. It doesn't smoke or anything, just an obnoxious strong smell that only started 6 months ago. I know people have complained about the smell in the cab but that is not the problem. I don't have any smells in the cab that I notice. I just had 2 injectors replaced, FICM, EGR Cooler, and PCM and no change.

Do you think that the harsher smell could just be caused by it be colder temperature outside therefore making the air more dense and holding and the exhaust lower to the ground for you to smell it.
I suggest this because I know when I go out and start my truck now that it is cold out I smell more exhaust. Also HMMWVs and Bradleys are the same way. When it gets cold out it is almost unbearable to stand outside a Bradley because the fumes make your eyes and nose burn but in the summer they are fine.

This is an old post, but did you ever figure this out? I have had the same issue for a few years myself. No evidence of any leaks in the system, but an unpleasant odor clearly coming from the exhaut. Worse some days than others. Wondered if it could be a dead critter but it's been too long for that. NO performance issue and no cabin smells.

Mine has a sulfer-ish smell and no turbo. I presume it's a catalytic failing but so long as I don't sense any power loss or other symptoms, hard to justify the big bucks to replace that. Wondered if it could be as simple as a fouled oxygen sensor though... maybe too rich a blend. Or... the changing winter/summer gasoline mix...

This. For me, I'm chasing down exhaust smell in the cabin and in front of the truck. I've looked at the exhaust manifolds and y-pipe and don't find the telltale carbon of a leak. Am thinking the lower cac connection at this point?

Found the problem... source of the smell...
Wasn't exhaust related at all... I had a leaking oil seal on my rear hub. The oil was coming through the seal and getting up onto the breaks adn burning off... left a lingering smell that I mistook for exhaust. Pulled the hub and replaced the seal. Fixed the problem.

Also look for carbon tracking around the manifold to cylinder head mating surfaces.

Just picked up my 04 Excursion from Dealer dealing with the same issue of bad exterior and interior smell of exhaust. Dealer replaced they Y pipe and said it had 2 cracks in it. I could still smell exhaust in the cab (to a lesser degree) so I brought it back up today. I will try and post how it turns out. $1400 first round. Ouch!!
