95 F150 5.0 Air pump bypass belt length. Some observations

Today I was leaving work with my heat blasting.
Its about 25 degrees here in Toledo.
As I pulled away the cab filled with smoke.
Smelled like when you run the vacuum cord over when sweeping.

I pulled back in the lot grabbed my utility knife from my tool belt and popped the hood.
(If it was on fire I was gonna cut the radiator hose)
The smoke dissipated quickly and it seemed to come from up in front.

I looked at the serpentine belt and pulleys.
The idler had burned flat spots all around. I figured it seized up.
I live nearby and babied it home hoping it would get me there.
I noted no squeeling or smoke all the way.

I swapped the pulleys and decided to bypass the air pump to
see if the noise would be gone

Of course not. I'm not that lucky.
I think the alternator bearing is bad or one of the new pulleys
is just super noisy.

Here is where my research began:

I ran thru about 6-8 fanbelts trying to get a perfect fit.

I did a search online and a guy put a post up that said 88.2" belt
(or 882K6 at AutoZone) to bypass the pump. Too short.
I also read a billion posts about using a string around all the pulleys
to get a measurment. I did it and came up with 90" or 900K6
It was way too short. 905K6 was too short too.

I tried a bunch and narrowed it to 915K6 or 91.5" - 6 ribs.
One problem is the idler is nearly at its full travel and
it seems that its should be a bit tighter.
My idler loses its springiness at the end of its spring tension.

My next step is to shim out the alternator a little to
get more tension on the pulley.

Another potential problem is that the belt wraps the
alternator pulley by about 75%.
That may be my alternator noise issue.
Its a lot of tension, even at the reduced rate of the fully
extended tensioner, all the way around the pulley circumference.

There is no size between 915K6 and the too short 910K6.

Well im glad you didn't cut the radiator hose or we might be talking about something different . With the belt off spin every pulley around to find the problem , sounds like your idler tensinoner pulley may be bad , make sure your routing the belt the right way ...Lew

They make an air pump eliminator pulley for the air pump for the 5.0 & 5.8, they also have a eliminator kit for the AC ...Lew

I may buy the AC delete kit.
The belt won't route properly with the AC compressor pulled

This belt I used allows you to leave the pump in place.
The advantage?
I don't have to pull the upper intake to block the EGR or the bung on the exhaust. Also it only costs a belt.

The bummer here is the pulleys I pulled seemed to turn great.
In fact everything does. I'll defrost and mess with it tomorrow.
I have no idea what froze up and was burning the belt.

I think it got up to about 8 degrees here in MN today. Anyway I am running an O'reilly's belt on my 92 F150 5.0 without a smog pump and AC and it's a K060876 part number. It was a little on the tight side but I was able to get it on and that was last Febuary. I removed the smog pump stuff and blocked off the egr. My gas milage increased from about 8 to 14mpg. But my fpr was bad also so it was running rich. I have not had any problems and no cel. I left the solenoids hooked up and the egr is still there so the valve still moves up and down, just is blocked off on both sides. It was leaking and didn't want to spend the money on a $1300 truck. Drove it 300 miles one way to Iowa for Turkey day and no problems. It's my daily driver to work in the winter and starts great at -35 F last year even. About -9 this year so far. Not sure why yours smoked. Too loose?

holy crap 8-14mpg?

Now I wish I had plugged the EGR when I had the intake off.

Anyway, No the OE belt wasn't too loose but its 99% likely it was there since 1995. (kinda like the oil)

Me and my dad went through 5 different sizes before we found that the 91.5" fit best. (Goodyear Gatorback 4060915) It seemed like it was at the end of the tensioners stroke. But checking without the belt, it still had a good half inch of spring loaded play.

For future searchers reference, it's a 93 F150 5.0 w/ a/c

how did you route the belt when you bypassed the smog pump? like normal but just leaving out the smog pump,or did you have to do something different? I am seriously thinking about doing this, smog pump is not hooked up and my belt needs replaced anyhow.

You must have missed where he stated the fuel pressure regulator was bad.. that was responsible for his bad milage not the EGR.
