6.0 diesel turbo issues

Had it towed home & then to dealer next day. Initially they stated problem was bad FICM & EGR valve...had them replace them..$1750.00 & 2 days later picked up truck drove it 10 mins, black smoke loss of power..
ANY THOUGHTS on the problems that occurred...any comments would be welcomed....went back to dealer..waited...they stated they believed bad FICM caused raw fuel to be dumped into engine causing CAT converter to go bad & break up....converter was $1200.00 for part...another several days & another couple thousand...picked it up...waitied a few days to drive it went around 50 miles & feeling loss of intermittent power... wrench & eng lights came on...drove right to dealer..AGAIN...this time they said Turbo was bad..cost was $1950 for new Turbo...they had it for a week & when I picked it up they said the 1st turbo they put in went bad because of carbon build up...had to replace that..BUT they didn't charge me for 2nd...LOL....
Now here is the BIG question...they claim that I had let turbo idle too much causing carbon build up which caused all of my problems...now truck is sitting in driveway & wife wants to sell it....Thanks

This does not make sense to me. If they put one in and it went bad within that week from carbon build up there was another problem. Sounds like they are trying to blame you for their error in the first repairs so they don't have to eat the turbo cost. I mean really to much carbon build up in less then a week sound like a serious problem some where else, and that problem ate your OG turbo.

Don't get me wrong I am not dealer basher at all, but this just sounds crooked to me.

sounds like Dealership has no idea and is just throwing parts at the truck

Catalytic converter is a pass through type on these trucks. absolutely no way it can affect the motor. it has a big 3" hole straight through it.


I think you need to find a better competant technician...and take that Dealership to task for just wasting your money. Turbo doesn't just "go bad" because of carbon build-up.



What codes is the PCM throwing?

You would be better off to get some gauges and with the help of the Forum try to figure it out yourself

even if you dont want to turn the wrenches the gauges will normaly show what part and or system needs attention

then once you have a good idea what needs to happen you can keep the dealership under control

Sounds like Shop has a Loose Cannon in there changing Parts

Alot of the Folks here are getting the TOP END rebuilt for around that

Best thing you can do is spend the weekend reading the forum there is a tech folder at top of 6.0L forum tons of good stuff there

Man its hard to imagine you just spent 5000.00 on nothing pretty much . I feel for you . I know how your wife must feel and you can't really blame her . And the worst thing is your truck may not be fixed . Don't ever go back to that place again .

Benny..Blade35...thanks for the reply & thanks to others, Tim...I live in Colonia, NJ, 07067 ..Woodbridge TWP...exit 11 off NJ TPK.
My wife has told me that when she did some research on these issues she found that there are a lot of complaints about this engine & lots of turbo problems. *EDIT* - no legal discussions please
I tow a 35' Montana 5th wheel...originally these trucks with options run about $52K-55K...I can't afford to get another...wife doesn't want to use truck anymore...doesn't trust it..I'm retired & was expecting this would be my last truck...guess not....very sad.
According to report when 1st bought in the following codes were detected...
P0404..P0611..P01335..P2617...that was when he replaced the FICM & EGR..which they said were caused by carbon from idling truck too long..
Total cost for 3 visits ..$1750.76 + 1903.18 + 2094.50 = $5748.44..that was after they said they saved me money on turbo..initial cost was supposed to be $1950...reduced cost to $1500 & ONLY $350 for labor this time....really disgusted.

Have you heard about the high-idle mod?

As far as all of the problems you (or your wife) read about, most are related to bad maintenance or operating practices, aftermarket mods poorly chosen/installed/operated, and lack of troubleshooting action (or knowledge) on the part of who is working on the vehicle.

Yes, there are too many "lemons" to feel good about, but they are a REAL SMALL percentage.

If you decide to keep it, you need to do a few things ........

Read up and learn about it (and learn how to do the common repair things).

Get a gauge system so you can watch key parameters.

Don't skimp on maintenance
- oil and filter changes every 5k miles (sythetic oil is best IMO)
- fuel filters every 10k miles, but drain the water every 5k miles
- OEM filters only
- transmission flushes every 30k miles (or you can drain and refil a few times - you have a drain valve)
- external transmission filter change every 30k miles (some do it every 20k miles)
- Use Ford Gold coolant and flush every 50k miles, or switch to ELC coolant and flush every 100k miles
- flush brake fluid every 100k miles (can prevent brake calipers from siezing from internal corrosion)

For gauges - watch coolant temp, oil temp, system voltage, FICM voltage, boost, EGT's (particularly important since you tow), tranny temp, and a few others can help you troubleshoot if you are familiar with what they normally run. The factory gauges are little more than idiot lights.

An example -

Bad batteries or a weak alternator are common causes of FICM failure. A failed FICM can (99% of the time) be removed easily enough, sent to Ed at FICMrepair.com and be back to you for $350. It possibly could have been prevented by staying on top of the battery/charging system health - but Ed does rebuild them better than new (more durable components). Then, the EGR valve at TousleyFordParts is around $350. So, you could have tackled the first set of problems for $1000 less than charged.

Another example is with the turbo - it frequently can be cleaned / reconditioned and a new one is not needed.

Also - many people find that a good fuel; additive can help combustion (cetane boost).

With all the talk about carbon, I would highly recommend installing a fuel pressure gauge (which also requires a sensing unit since Ford did not install one). You may have a low fuel pressure issue that is contributing to poor combustion.

Oh - I assume it is a 2003 model year?

Thanks for all of the info...will have to discuss a lot of things with wife to decide..really love my truck.
1st of all it is a 2006 F250 short bed SRW Club Cab..has 97K miles on it now..NO aftermarket mods of anything added
Purchased used with 19k on it...habitually try to keep oil & fuel filters changed..around 30K had trans filter & oil changed.
NOW...you mention bad batteries...I did have that issue...few years ago had replaced a battery not knowing that it is recommended to replace both at same time...just did so in June...had starting problems going back to Sept/Oct...left it for winter while I took wife's Explorer to Fla.
Based on all my complaining..it is for all intensive purposes fixed...afraid to run it though
Idling...when I was at my daughter's in Wisconsin...july/Aug...when my wife would do some shopping for maybe as much as 45 mins at a time sat in truck with dog running truck with air as temps outside were 100+...it was on this return trip that was going on & when we broke down.
Don't know anything about high idle mod....
Basically from what you are saying sounds like a combination of bad batteries & possibly idling caused carbon problems...FICM/EGR problem..??

No aftermarket mods that you know about. Who really knows what the previous owner did to the truck. It's a 2006 with 19K when you bought it. When did you buy it?

When my FICM went out (which is the only stock to have gone bad with my truck), it was replaced under the emissions warranty. I've never had an EGR valve go bad, so I don't know how my dealership would have done that. I would, however, try to go to a different place, unfortunately, with the 6.0 not if the Ford dealerships are the best place to go at times. Some people are just stuck with outdated ideas about the 6.0 and how to fix them.

tex25025...No you are right...don't know but I had gone out to FORD site for history & didn't see anything there..although that means nothing....IF I decide to keep it will definitely be looking for someone/someplace to work on truck as I am not a mechanic...can do simple things....thanks for reply...
