Looking at a 1959 F100 4X4 this afternoon

I am not familiar with this year as much as the 48-52's what are some of the things I should look for or be concerned about. owner says it has power brakes which were rare on these trucks?? minimal rust, just some on floorboards of cab and body shape said it's typical of the era work truck?

I don't have any pictures so i don't know what to expect, but I will take a few and post them later.'
he says it has the Yblock 292 and it turns over.

I must be crazy for thinking of another project but, I can't help myself from looking. plus I am straying away from the Bonus Builts by just looking but I have always liked the 58 59's plus it's 4X4.
I think it's a good price but like I said I haven't seen it yet???

Thanks in advance for any quick responses as I will be looking at it in a few hours.

Josh

I would take a close look at the 4x4 driveline components, as these would be the hardest parts to replace, relatively.

Look at the lower parts of the front fenders, front cab corners, floor boards, rear cab corners, these are potential places for rust. Several of the vendors have replacement panels for all but the front cab corners. I will update my gallery with pictures of mine (58 f100 styleside. I have replaced and rebuilt all my rust. Good luck, it is somewhat of an orphan but a great span of years.

Vbarker, thanks for you reply and pictures of your truck. looks like your truck is going to be really nice.

I went and looked at it, and well it's a truck with lots of body work needed, Don't they all! lol
anyway I cant figure out what year it is? 58 maybe? I googled for ma bit but it appears that so many of these trucks have had grills interchanged etc that I don't know. Also I am not familiar with what the first 4X4's looked like, this one is a DANA SPICER # 's as follows.

Serial # 227247
B/M 300205 3
Model ? 24

truck Serial Number etc as follows

Vin F10 J0K 40032

118" WB COLOR =M DATE 18C TRANS AA AXLE 02

GVW 5600 126 HP RPM 4000 DSO 4110

Here is a link to the pictures I took, 1958 59 Ford F100 pictures by jfmadsen - Photobucket

any help really apreciated. I dont think it is factory 4X4 since it appears the hole was torch cut for the shifter. I wants $500 for it and maybe I can get him down some, it's probably worth that but the body does need lots of work. including the front cab mounts as VBarker did mention as uisually being rusted.

Thanks

Josh, according to the VIN it is a 1960

F10= 1/2 ton
J= 223 6Cyl
0= 1960
K= Built in Kans City
40032 = serial number

Yes most of them need a lot of work. I'm not familiar with the 4x4. There will others here that are.

Thanks for the compliment on mine. It has taken almost 2 yrs of weekends to get to where I'm at. Good Luck on your decision.

Thanks guys,
The grill on this one looks different compared to most of the 60's I have seen, did they have 2 different grill options for 60?

My info given in this post was originally something worth reading, but now I'm not so sure.

Thanks for that link Bobby, that will come in handy for lots of vehicles.

Havi, Yep that Grill was throwing me off, I can see that they could have easily swapped it out, it looks like maybe at one point the PO had mounted a plow? there are some brackets welded to the frame and there was a switch in cab for winch in and out so maybe after the plow was removed the had to replace the grill??

I personally like the look of the 59's grill and hood over the 60.
Thanks again everyone, Not sure what im going to do right now?? maybe wait a couple days and see if he still has it Monday and offer him something???

I like the '59 Grille and hood better, too. I'll never be given the chance to own one, though.

thats a sweet truck Havi , I love it.
If I really want this truck I should just buy it, at least just for the chassis and 4X4 and can always find better body/sheet metal parts if need be down the road! I imagine the 4X4 setup alone is not cheap to find??? hmmm decisions

Josh, several vendors have replacement panels. If you can work sheetmetal the cab corners can be rebuilt. We rebuilt mine and they aren't perfect, but I believe the strength and structure is good. If he only wants 500, that's not a bad price if for nothing more than the chassis and 4x4.
