That does'nt look anything like mine.

 

i know ur truck is the same year as mine so we both have the big fat round one... but thats the one that advance carries... thats the pic from their website.... and there should be a fuel filter further up the line towards the engine

 

I thought there was supposed to be one in front of the fuel pump on the frame rail but it is not there nor anywhere else. I'll be putting one inline tommorrow

 

hmm mine has one where the frame kicks up at an angle u know where im talking about and it was on there from the factory.... well good luck and i hope u get all the kinks worked out

 

The 1986 only had the fuel filter in the selector valve but the 1988 should not have one in the selector valve and should have an inline filter mounted beside the high pressure fuel pump.

The fuel selector valves that "Hitokori" posted will not work. The first one is for for a Carburetor engine and the last one is for a Carburetor 460 or a Diesel engine.
Neither one has a Reservoir for the High Pressure Fuel Pump that is needed for the fuel injected engine.

No local auto parts store will have the right selector valve, You have to get it on the Internet or order it from a Ford dealer.

Sorry for the delay, computer went haywire for a day. I bypassed the selector valve and it runs perfect!!!!!!!! We ended up finding it by hooking up a fuel pressure gauge and driving it down the road, it was at 40 psi till you hit the throttle and it went to 15 psi. I put an inline filter in and all should be ok for now. Thanks for all the input from everyone, espeacially bill (subford) you pointed me in the right direction. One more question though, can i put a manual valve on that or is it worth the money to replace it? (not sure if i trust putting another one in)

 

You need a Reservoir for the High Pressure Fuel Pump that is needed for the fuel injected engine.
It will run OK with out it except at WOT when you need the extra fuel.
Even the single tank trucks and Broncos have the non switching Reservoir.

If you do wire up a solenoid valve you will still need the booster pumps in the selected tank running for priming the high pressure pump and for going up hills.
Also you will have a return fuel problem as the solenoid valve does not have a select fuel route for the return fuel to the right tank.

 

Sounds like i better just put a new one in it, any suggestions on whre to purchase that? The dealer just seems way to expensive!!

 

How did you figured out it is the selector valve?

 

We hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and ran it outside the hood so we could monitor what it was doing while driving, when the pressure dropped from 40 to 15 psi when you stepped on the gas, we decided to bypass the selector valve just to make sure that was the problem (we had already replaced and checked the boost pumps & the high pressure pump for pressure)

 

I remember now you now you said that above.
Did you check to see if the boost pumps were running and had 5-8 PSI on the supply line from the tank?
Without this pressure the valve will not switch.
I think you said the valve had a filter in the bottom, did you replace it or do away with it if you put on an in line filter?

 

The boost pump (on the front tank- rear one isn't working) was checked and operating properly, I did not replace the filter in the selector valve, I just put one inline. I was told the odds of repairing the selector valve were pretty slim.
