How to: Remove Emblems w/ Pics!

As originally posted in the 7.3 forum:

So I was bored at work today and decided i wanted to remove my door emblems. So I did a few searches on here and couldn't find 1 thread that was a good step by step. I am a little over cautious about removing emblems from my truck after my tailgate incident. So I took all the info I found in other threads and used it to my advantage. And here is what I came up with.

What you need:

Alot of people had suggested different types of solvents to use for unsticking the emblem and getting the glue off afterward. I had three available.

In order of popularity in threads:

1. WD40

2. Goo-Gone

3. Simple Green

I used all three.

Set by step.

1. Take WD40 and spray all around the emblem. Let it soak in.

2. Use fishing line in a sawing motion to "cut" the emblem from the truck.
(note: it should not take much to cut through adhesive, if so spray more wd40)

Heres what it should look like after emblem is gone:

3. SOAK left over adhesive with WD40. Take an old gift card and use it to scrape away most of left over adhesive crud. (foamish looking stuff)

(note the wetter the foamish stuff is the easier)

4. Use Goo-Gone AND Simple Green to remover left over glue and dirt.

The dirt ring around it is the hardest part to get off. But it will just need some elbow grease.

LOL!!!

Just remember, before you go hog wild removing emblems, that some (like the front fender ones) have pins on the back of the emblems that fit into alignment holes...makes removing them pretty hard and then what do you do about the holes? However, if you are using some aftermarket replacement emblems (without pins), remember to use tape to locate where the original emblems were so you can cover the holes and keep the correct spacing etc.

Just grab a hair dryer and a heavy duty extension cord. Heat it up for a minute or 2 and it will probably fall off, or else you can just pop it off easy.

X-2 on the hair dryer it removes most adhesives easily, including rear view mirrors. When I get ready to sell one of my company vehicles I removes the decals with a heat gun. Acetone works great on the glue, but rinse it off right away or it will eat at the paint.
