help identifying carb? seems to be labelled wrong.

hi there. i was wondering if there was a definitive way to identify the carb, other than looking at the choke controller. its definately a motorcraft 2150. the truck is a 77 f250 custom with a 400ci engine. 4x4 if that matters. the only model number i found on it is D8UE-AA, which is a motorcraft 4350, which, is a 4BL carb... so that cant possibly be right. im trying to get a rebuild kit for it, but they have 2 different ones available for the 2150. plz halp! is there another way to identify it? it has an x with 16 written under it on the top near the choke plate... thanks in advance!

I have been having a similar problem, my 400 has the wrong carb size (1.08 vs 1.21) I oredered the correct size carb off of Ebay but it also has no tag, and it will need to have a kit installed.
I have not been able to find out what parts in the kits are different or why the $5.00 (est) price difference. Is your carb the original if so you may be able to get Numberdummy or your Ford parts guy to look up the proper carb number for your application.

man this thing was dirty. i boiled it in a big pot of water and dish detergent 3 times and each time the water came out crap brown. then i sprayed it with carb cleaner and took a toothbrush to it. i cant believe it was so dirty. im about half-way through putting it back together now, and the cheaper kit seems to have everything i need. some parts are slightly different, but they all hook up and perform the same functions.

Cool, I think (could be wrong here) that there were different venturi sizes on those carbs which may be the best way to tell them apart. I don't have the specs in front of me, but I will look tonight and see what I can find. In the meantime, good luck with the rebuild and let us know how it turns out for you

Shane1447, what venturi size is your carb, I may be wrong but I have been told the 400 uses the 1.21. It is located on the left side of the float bowl. Did you find any numbers stamped in the side of the mounting flange these would be an engineering number? I will be rebuilding my Ebay carb (when it gets here) what brand kit are you using?
Sorry for all the questions, let us know how you make out on the rebuild.

well, before you go using this information to make a final decision, i should note that this IS the original carb, but the engine was originally a 351. it got converted to 400 not all too long ago. i dont know if they even rejetted it or not.

update on the rebuild in a bit.

alright well, ive finished putting it all back together. kinna an all day dealie, but mostly just because i had to clean everything meticulously.

The cheaper kit (<a href="http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsProduct.jsp?skuDescription=Gp-Sorensen+/+Carburetor+Kit&categoryDisplayName=Fuel+Delivery& fromString=&itemIdentifier=3526_32542_12062_&produ ctId=3526&sortType=&parentId=49-0&filterByKeyWord=&isSearchByPartNumber=&navValue= 14900183&categoryNValue=&fromWhere=&itemId=183-0&displayName=Carburetor+Kit&store=5202&searchText =&brandName=Gp-Sorensen"> Exact kit here</a>) seems to have contained everything needed, and the gaskets all seem to fit properly. unfortunately i cant test it out till tomorrow, because that truck is loud loud loud, and its late. but i will say, i was amazed it was even running before with the amount of crap i cleaned outta that thing, and how badly it was leaking. on that note... any tips on how to tune a carb when you dont have a tachometer? =P tranny is auto if that makes a difference.

ill let you know how it runs tomorrow. i tried to set everything basically to where it was before. took some pics and counted turns of the idle screws.
