Transmission Wiring Harness

Hello my fellow Ford Friends!

The Tow/Haul light has been flashing and the temp gauge spikes while my '03 6.0 is idling or at a traffic light. Ford replaced the Transmission Temp Sensor in May 2009 w/110k - the problem came back (Late Nov '09 w/130k). Service is now telling me the transmission wiring harness will need to be replaced (I couldn't get lucky with just another bad sensor to be covered under warranty). They quoted me $600 to replace. Any chance of doing this one myself? Can someone help me out with some info?

Thanks - and Happy Holidays to everyone!

So tell us, this last time they diagnosed it, did they open the tranmission pan and inspect the harness? Because this smells like a possible BS story made up to explain to a customer why the same sensor failed after only 6 months. I would be more likely to believe another failed sensor.

So if you want to do it yourself, the TFT sensor is an easy one to change yourself. While in there, inspect the connection at the sensor end for any signs of damage.

Bill - I am not sure - I brought the truck back to the service department assuming they would have to replace the sensor again - there was only a diagnostic fee charged of $118 and no talk of fees for fluid, etc. However, when I rejected the proposed work, (this is when they told me I needed a new wiring harness), they did need a few hours to "put the truck back together" before I was able to pick it up.
'How is this harness run? Do you have any idea the cost for the parts?

Not really, I've never done one.

But here is a thread where a guy mentions a price for the sensor, and I have a post in that thread that links to a procedure for installing the sensor.

I couldn't say what is involved in changing a harness. Best I can offer you is a wiring diagram:

I hope that helps a little.

the trans harness that they want to replace is also a common failer abot not as common as the tft itself.
to replace the harness drain the trans, drop the pan. remove the connectors from the megatronix, remove the megatronix, remove pass through from trans case and install new harness making sure not to cut the o-ring. reinstall inrevers order. it will make more sence when you see the part.

megatronix = valve body before someone asks what that is
