302 Firing order, HEI upgrade Thanksgiving turkey!

I attempted to upgrade the Uni to HEI this weekend and now she won't start

I lifted the old cap, leaving the wires intact, then pulled out the dizzy. I put the new one in and pointed the rotor back where the old rotor was. Then attached plug wires back where they were on the original cap. Then almost wore down he battery trying to start it.

Came inside and read some FTE posta and figured I needed 12 volts to run the HEI. I disconnected the old positive feed to the coil and ran a temporary jumper wire from the battery just to get her fired up.

NO DICE!

Back inside for more reading about TDC & firing order. So I pulled the dizzy again, set #1 cylinder at TDC and reinstalled it with the rotor pointing to #1 on the cap.

She popped and backfired when I turned the key, so I turned the dizzy a little each time and kept trying it. I had a couple small fires in the carb, but she wouldn't run.

Back inside i'm looking at a diagram of a 302 with the dizzy cap showing #1 located near the #5 cylinder and not near the #1 cylinder like my old cap was.

So I located a picture taken of the motor a couple weeks ago and it shows the dizzy in backwards I think?.....it shows #1 on the rotor pointing to #1 cylinder on the block.....exact opposite of the many 302 diagrams I looked at thru google.

I'm totally baffled now. She ran good when I bought it 2 weeks ago, drove two hours home with it. The former owner did say it wore out points quickly and i'd be better off with an HEI.

It came with an MSD Blaster coil running the old points system and from what i've read this might have caused burning points if the resistor was junk.

I've uploaded a picture of the engine into my photostream if anybody can help i'd appreciate it more than that dry bird we ate thursday....lol

It's dark now and darn cold out, but tomorrow i'll find TDC again and turn the dizzy about 180 so it matches those diagrams.

WOOHOO, she's running again.

I guess it was 180 out?????

question is, why was it running before? cuz it was definitely wired wrong.
