Noise Question

Hi Everyone. I now have about 500 miles on my new unit. Yesterday I noticed that when accelerating (from a stop) that there is a "little rattling noise" for lack of other terms to describe it to be heared...like metal type rattling. I never noticed it before. Performance is not affected. Nothing else seems different. Just this noise.

Furthermore it seems like once I get to about 45 or so and the final shift happens you don't really hear it any more. Once the final shift happens and you push the pedal to go faster, you can feel the power and the boot gauge goes up but you don't hear the noise.

Just when either stopped and taking off, or moving slowly and take off.

I have never heard this kind of noise from my 7.3. I don't know if it is somethng that is normal for these units as this is my first 6.4L PSD experience.

Thanks for the input.

Update....I have read some other posts. Mine does not tick at idle that I can hear. Now 700 miles and it seems to be noticable when about 1500+ RPM's. Also noticed when curise control on and set for about 75 MPH on interstate..got a touch louder when going up an incline.

On my 7.3 I would just get a louder whistle sound from the turbo...now ticking wih the 6.4L.

Is this still the normal tick?

One of the issues most encounter with this motor is all those strange noises. The motor is so much quietier they are picked up now. Not real sure of the sound you are decribing..but this will bump it to the top.

The sounds you are hearing are normal for this engine and many other modern diesels. My 08 has done this since day one and after 22k miles no problems encountered.

I read this post with great amusement. I also had a 7.3 and it was so loud you didn't hear anything. I also have an 08, I too noticed perhaps what you are describing, I'd look at my wife and ask her if she heard that noise..... She'd say what you mean the diesel, oh yea, it's a diesel. That may sound stupid but the change from the 7.3 to the 6.4 to me is amazing sound wise, performance wise ride quality, towing ability...
