Just how much abuse can these engines take?

I know it's a loaded question, but here's why I bring it up. I have 221,000 miles on my block. At about 205k or so, I changed out the original vibration dampner pulley on the crank because it was dry-rotted and you could see it oscillating when the engine was running. SO, after about 10-15,000 miles, my replacement pulley took a crap (as seen in my posts last week). The damn thing just broke loose and worked it's way back about 11/16" on the piece that actually bolts to the crank. Knowing how stout these blocks are, I would like to attribute that to the replacement being a cheap NAPA made in china part. However, the manager at the base hobby shop is a retired Navy Chief, ASE certified, and has worked a little on PSD's before, told me something that is now kinda bothering me. HE told me that it could be possible, due to my particular driving habits, that the main bearings could be going and thereby causing the crank to turn out of round and causing premature failure of the last pulley I had on. Of course it's a diesel, so you can't tell a knock from ignition.... Anyone ever experience bearing failure at only 220k?

I have no idea if that could be true but my gut feeling is BS.
Many 7.3's have 2-3x more miles thany you and arent having problems????

That might be a great question for the OBS forum, too.

Danny.. You would have been the one I would have asked that question to.. you just came from a place where, if I remember correctly, "they step on the pedal and dont get off it until they arrive". Have you seen anything like that?

I would have figured there were several riggs there with more miles then yours?

Hey guys thanks for the reinforcement of my own belief that it was just a fluke. Like ya said Costa (again I love that avatar!!) mine can be considered relatively low mileage compared to others out there with never a problem. And yes Pat, we are pretty tough on our 6.5 GM's out there in the sandbox LOL!! Never broke a motor, but radiator mounts (tons) and even Stanadyne pump shafts, but never a crank or bearings

They did, but now it's mostly 6.0's and some 6.4's!! And they kill them in about 30,000 miles or less! The fuel quality is horrendous, and thier PM (preventative maintenance) cycle is almost unheard of. from what I've seen, they rarely change oil, filters, or other important stuff. Before I left, I did up a nice excel document before I left for the Al Anbar province police forces, but I would not bet my paycheck that they would ever adhere to it. Unfortunately there are too few many Iraqis that give a damn, and those that do, and aren't corrupt, don't get the funding (money provide by OUR TAX DOLLARS) to buy parts before the corruption takes a cut. Isn't this a perfect world????

Why should they maintain them, when the American Taxpayer will just give them another one?

Iraqis.

Getting what their culture deserves....
