1999 ford expedition overheat

Hi all, a little background, i have a 1999 ford expy 123,000. About 3 months ago, the crossover pipe went out, had it repaired, new intake manifold gasket , and a tuneup done(new plugs and 2 caps). got truck back, still winter here in wisconsin, so never any issues. last couple of days truck , even when sitting overnight never got back to completely cold, temp gauge showed mid level, and then last night driving home she shot up to hot, got oil/temp light. Last night i left it outside, got down to 40ish degrees.. went to start this morning, gauge was at middle of cool. drove 4 miles to work and she started climbing. no coolant on ground...should i go after thermo first, or waterpump? coolant was also replaced at same time as crossover pipe. oh, btw, 5.4. thanks in advance.

What do you mean it never got completely cold after sitting overnight? That doesn't sound right. Even if you keep it in a heated garage it would cool to and match air temperature within a few hours and the temp gauge will will be at the "C". You say the temp gauge still showed a reading the next morning. If that is the case, I think your temp sensor for the gauge is defective. Disconnect the wire from it and the gauge should go to "C". If it doesn't, then something else is wrong and it is unlikely that it is overheating.

The temperature sending unit for the gauge needs to be replaced.
