New Turbo, or rebuild Turbo?

I need a new Turbo for my 04 PSD. I know in 2005 they changed the Turbo, correct? Is it a better Turbo? Since I have to replace it, I might as well upgrade. Are there bigger Turbos that I can get? Maybe an 09 Turbo? I know that I love the sound of the 05 Turbo, but If I can increase my HP and TQ from upgrading my turbo while replacing it I might as well.

Thanks for your help,
-Jeremy.

If you have to go for a whole new turbo and you're paying out of pocket, I would look to the Industrial Injection Stage 1 Hybrid VGT turbo. They're only like $1400 and they flow more air and might last longer than a stock turbo. With proper custom tuning, you'll definitely increase your power with this turbo. This is probably the turbo I will go with when mine goes out after warranty.

$1,400 is steeep for a replacement turbo.

Is the 05-06 Turbo better than the 03-04 turbo that I have in my truck right now? Is the 09 Turbo better than all the above? Buying a stock turbo will be a lot cheaper than buying an after market turbo thats why I am curious about the above listed turbos.

Is there a way to buy a standard Gates turbo instead of a Ford ?

Or is it proprietary manufactured for Ford?

I'll buy any turbo for my truck, but I was hoping to spend a lot less than $1,400. It doesn't necessarily have to be a Ford turbo, I just know that they're cheap.

Cheapest route, with no custom tuning required, is a new Ford turbo which is between $900-$1000 at online sources.

Suppose you are me and you want to do the turbo next year - unless it failed before that -

What would you replace at the same time given my 257,000 miles?

ie... EGR cooler, (or delete), EGR valve, head bolts, glow plugs, injectors, parts of exhaust, etc.?
