When the belt won't hold it I use a strap wrench. I have not replaced one on a 5.4 yet does it have the 4 bolts/nuts or does it thread on the waterpump shaft? Either way if you can't get the fan side to stay still with the fan belt use a strap wrench. The strap wraps around the pulley so it will keep it from turning.

Both actually. There is the big shaft nut (which is reverse threaded) then once that is off there are 4 bolts holding the pulley to the water pump.

Places like Advance Auto and Autozone rent the special tool kit to remove it. The tool kit comes with the pulley holder and the wrenches to fit the nut. I think it's a 32mm (1-1/4") wrench that you would need.

Sorry about that, I guess I got it confused with Chrysler which uses the revered threaded shaft.
