Forced To Work On Thanksgiving
This is less of a complaint and more of a question, but who here is working on Thanksgiving? The company I work for is open 364 days a year. We are closed only on Christmas. My job is not a vital... I know doctors, fire fighters, police, ect all work 365 days a year and my hat is off to all of you. I knew I had to work holidays when I signed up for this job. I don't have a family of my own and don't care too much for my extended family, so its not a huge deal to me, but they are "forcing" us all to come in on Thanksgiving and work our regular shifts. We got an email that basically said we are required to show up on Thanksgiving and that sick days will not be tolerated. Granted we get douvble pay for holiday but I look at some of my co-workers who have new familys and think how hard this must be for them.

As much as I would hate to work Thanksgiving, right now I would do it. My wife and I both lost our jobs due to the economy and cannot find new ones to save our lives. And yes, we are considering all options including retail, fast food, etc... We're either overqualified or underqualified.

I'm on call 24/7. I have been since October 24, 2008. In that time I've been unavailable for a total of 6 hours. I had a tooth pulled 1.5 hours, Dr's. appointment 1.5 hours and had to have my finger sutured (7 stitches), when I got between 2 of my dogs fighting over dinner, add 3 hours. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day it makes no difference. I'm grateful to have the work and besides I like my job. (See Signature)

Fortunately, we're closed Thanksgiving and the day after is a 'bonus' holiday. (We gave up Columbus Day and Veteran's Day for the day after Thanksgiving, and the day after Christmas, many years ago.)
However, if asked to work. . . I would.
Double time and a half for holiday pay.
In this economy, I don't think that there are many that would turn down the work.
(What you're not willing to do. . . somebody else, will!)

i wouldn't mind to much with the extra pay...
besides... with me... if it would give me just enough time to come home right as the children are going to bed and the wild turkey is coming out... and the fighting to begin.. i mean isn't that what the holidays are really all about??? several drunk family members arguing about who's paying for moms home and who's not... and who is getting everything she owns???
or is that just my family???

I'm with you guys. I love the extra money. I love working more than the family stuff. I'm a light duty truck mechanic. I get off lucky. I chose a 7-5 shift so I can't complain. I had been working 65 hour weeks for the last two years until they cut me back to 38 a few weeks ago, so the extra money will help for sure. It's getting tight. We'll all make a good lunch at work to make up for it. I was just curious on who else is working.
