Where to purchase a shifter pin?

When I bought my truck I was told it needed a shifter-pin as the shifter rotated both ways and hits the dash. I took the cover off the top of the tranny and checked it out and it looked as if the pin was grinded down and rounded off. The swinging shifter really bugs me and I wanna replace it but don't know where to get the part. I've checked with NAPA and all the other Parts stores. Maybe it's a dealer only item? By the way my truck is a '71 with a 302 and a T18 Borg Warner 4 Speed.
Thanks,
Casey's71

Try a tranny shop. Also, I remember someone drilling out that hole and replacing it witha bolt. Better search as I think it was more precise than that.

I would've guessed it was an item that I could just get at the parts store, But then again the only items me or my dad have bought tranny related at a parts store were gears for the rearend although they're not really tranny related, and rebuild kits but then again that's a more common item than a shifter pin, I will try the tranny shop right up the road sometime this week, might even try and use a bolt like you had mentioned maybe I'll be able to find the post.
Thanks for the info,

Or, you can make one. Take the old pin out. Find a hardened drill bit the same size. Cut the drill bit to length and grind if needed. (Use the shank side, not the cutting side of the drill bit). I did this about fifteen years ago on my t-18 and it is still in there.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea either, we have plenty of 9/32 drill bits lying around, how bad of an idea would it be to do what Demian had talked about and put a bolt in there I had tried a piece of stock of about the original diameter and put the cap back on and I still get a bit of rotation, I was looking for the thread you were referring to but couldn't find it did they just drill from the original slot through the shifter and out the other side of the ball that the original pin would go to . I will try the drill bit out in the morning before school that would save a trip to the tranny shop.
Thanks for the help guys

Theere is no such thing as a "shifter pin" on any Warner 4 speed transmission.

You have a New Process 435 4 speed, not a Warner T18.

You know why I know this? The shift lever retainer cap on a NP435 has two notches on it, is retained into the shift tower with two pins.

The Warner trans shift lever retainer cap has no pins, the cap threads off/on.

Here's the real problem: To remove the NP435 cap, it must be pressed down and held down while turning it to removing it.

People are unaware of this removal procedure, use pliers to remove it, which tears out the two notches.

I would not be a bit surprised if this cap has one or both notches torn from it.

Due to FTE's server problems, brb....takes a while.

This transmission in your truck is not original, it was swapped in.

Ford did not offer a 4 speed M/T with the 302 engine in F100/150's until 1980.

Search np435 loose shifter. I think the thread was T18 loose shifting, or something like that.

See posts 6 & 7 for all the info.

I would have posted the sources that have the parts sooner, but FTE is experiencing server problems.

Ok so this morning I fabbed up a shifter pin out of some 9/32" round stock we had lying around, filed the ends down a bit to match the pin I remove and to help it sit in there easier, measured about 4 times and cut it with the band saw about 1/16" long so I could file it down a bit and it still fit snug, did that in the morning before going to the bus then once I got home I sit it in and realized that it didn't fix a thing. The slotted ball around the shifter where the pin sits seems to be loose on the shifter still letting it rotate. Thought about it and I couldn't just drill through it without slotting it to match the ball for movement between shift-gates, and I'd rather not do that. Went down to the tranny shop and took a look at the pin and I could tell it would be to small the guy told me if I brought my truck in they could probably figure it out and upsize, but I don't want them to do something I'm capable of doing myself. I think the best Idea is probably to mount the ball to the shifter tube, probably weld or solder it.

Number Dummy, I had assumed it was a T-18 from looking at it and the fact that 1st isn't synchronized, and that the cap already came off without forcing it down first. Are you sure that it's an NP435? I've decoded my vin and all of the codes over and over, the tranny code is F and according to all of the charts that I've seen that would indicate a T-18, The NP code is A and my vin indicates a 302 with the G? I have no doubt in your info. I've noticed that you really know your stuff, just double checking.

Is the shift lever retainer cap threaded or notched?

If the cap is not threaded, and the cap just comes right off, the notches have torn away.

There is no "pin" on a Warner 4 speed shift lever.

Where does this pin go that you are refering to?

It threads on, the pin I'm talking about is located at the top of the shift tower. It goes in a hole which goes through the threads up there and mates up to a slot in the ball at the base of the shift lever. I will get you a picture later on tonight to show you what I mean.
Thanks,

Where is reverse? On my np435, it is right and back towards the seat. I believe the T18 is right and towards the dash.
