Question 1991 explorer tranny issues

I am fairly new to the forum, so if I'm posting this in the wrong area, please let me know. I have a 1991 for explorer automatic with a 4" body lift 32x11.5x15" tires. 223,000 miles.
I just had the engine replaced, now the tranny is acting up! all gears work fine for a few minutes until the tranny warms up, and then it doesn't work at all in any gear. I know the a4ld tans is a total piece of S*#t! Is there an alternative trans that will bolt up without modifications out there? Is it something simple causing the problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No there is no easy bolt up for the A4LD.

Check the vacuum line to the modulator valve.

The A4Ld was an ok transmission, maybe a bit weak in stock form. Its greatest weakness however was that it does not tolerate neglect. Fuild changes every 30,000 miles at most is needed to prevent friction material buildup. Seems to me you have an internal leak that becomes more pronounced when the fluid warms up. This may be exaggerated by worn band and clutches. The stock system also has a weak cooler.

The A4LD is pretty good when upgraded. It is much better than the alternatives, i.e. chevies automatics or worse yet, a chrysler. The manual trans was a better choice, though not common. There are some transmissions that with the right bellhousing, can be used, but you will need to change the driveline too, and if you have 4WD, you may have to use a different Tcase. The A4LD uses a computer controlled 3-OD shift, and also the TC lockup is computer controlled. If these do not engage, you will have a CEL because the computer expects to see the load of the solenoids.

I would rebuild you old A4LD. There are upgraded aftermarket parts you can use, and you can also buy pre-upgraded transmissions.

thanks you for the advice! I think I'm just gonna have the old one rebuilt, but ask for some upgraded materials. I will replace the old cooler with an upgraded larger one as well.
