For clarification... the van turbo comes from the econoline diesels? ie, one from an ambulance would work? also, anyone know anything about the dual alternator that I've seen on the ambulances? Maybe this would help my ongoing battery problems in my 7.3!!!!
FYI, my buddy bought a 7.3 motor off the local ambulance company. It wont stay running and their mechanics as well as FORDs said they would have to dig into the block to figure it out. (Mind you this is all third party info.) They don't think its worth it and the manager wanted the ambulance either running or off his lot. SO, the mechanic sold my buddy the engine and towed the remaining body away.
This means I have access to the alternator and turbo, IF it's the van turbo that I see that everyone has. Same friend is going to take the injectors, mail em off and put in some big oiler injectors. He's checking today to ensure that he has forged rods.

Yes, that will be a "Van" turbo, which is a 1.15 A/R Turbine housing. You aren't required to have larger sticks but at least stage ones will help minimize the lag along with caramic coating or a turbo blanket.
On the alternators, IIRC the dual set-up only helps if you are pulling more than your single can put out ie. you won't have more at idle.
Some ambulances were on truck bodies, so make sure it is indeed from an E-series. If it is, then yes, it's a van turbo. You *will* need custom tuning at least, like Clay is saying. I ran mine with stock injectors, and it was okay, but definitely lagged a bit. It's a complete dog on stock tuning, so I wouldn't even consider it unless you planned on getting tuned. FWIW, I'm running hybrids with mine right now, and it's still a bit laggy for my taste. Might end up with a 38r after all.
good to know with the lag... I am going to get a DP tuner when taxes come in... I'm waiting already!!!!! No plans for injectors though. so maybe i'm not interested in the van turbo??? I drive my truck daily and do tow with it enough for it to matter. As for the alternator, I'm currently troubleshooting my continuing saga of dead batteries... changing em out almost yearly. I hate having a broken down truck, and can't have the wife broken down if shes driving it for some reason. yet every year it gets stuck somewhere with a damn battery problem.
If you had a van turbo with a 1.0 exhaust housing you wouldn't have such noticeable lag, but still, it won't spool quite as fast as the stocker with a .84 housing.

It's definitely livable, and surely helps with EGTs when towing, I just want a little less smoke and a little more spooling. With the fuel I can now pour in there, it smokes like hell now until the turbo spools. It's really a bit of a PITA when trying to pass someone. Before the trans kicks down and the turbo spools, I smoke out whoever's behind me, and I'm not trying. I think there is some more I could do with tuning, so my mind isn't made up yet........

I am having the situation with the 38R and 1.0 housing. I'll have the ceramic coated 1.15 on there when we have our PAA meeting at Rick's. You'll be able to see firsthand what the lag is like on the 38R combo. I'm sure we'll have plenty of notes to compare. My only real issue is with EGTs. I can live with the smoke, if I drive sensibly . I'm hoping the 6.0 IC/1.15 housing combo will keep my EGTs in check at WOT. I hate not being able to run at full potential.
What are your EBP numbers with the 1.0 combo, Roland? I'm getting way up there with my setup -- not 2:1, but at 35psi, I'm getting to about 50psi EBP.
I haven't datalogged the EBP. I'll try to do a 'before and after' to see what differences I see. My EGTs peaked at 1400 in the 140 extreme tune and I hope the IC and housing will get the numbers down.
Roland I will bet you will like the new 1.15 coated housing, it helped my egt's I can stand on it now.
