Door lock clip holder

I'm rebuilding doors on my '56 F100. Doors are off laying on a work bench. The insides are gutted. I push the new lock assembly with gasket through the door hole but there doesn't seem to be enough showing through inside to get the clip to bite into the grooves . What am I doing wrong.? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Was there any body work done to the outside of the door, that would cause the door skin to be thicker in that area, which wont allow the lock to sit deep enough ? I dont have experience with the 56 model but on my 55 I installed the clip from the inside wihich allowed the door rubber to fit tighter and glue better.

Thanks rdemilt
Your note reminded me of the slot in the side of the door. I was trying to push the clip in from inside. In addition I found a small rode in the center of the lock has to seat in a hole in the latch mechanism to bottom out flush and allow room for the clip to lock in.

Yes the rode, ( as you say ) is there to align the lock in the correct position. the slot in the door is there so the clip can be installed from the outside. I slid it in from the inside so It can't be seen. I think I stole the idea from another FTE member.
