390 to 429CJ?

Am I able to build a 390 into a 429CJ fairly easy, or is it more trouble than it's worth?

Will a FE block fit into the same mounts as my 400 in my 79 F250?

A 390 is a completely different engine than a 429 and in all but a very few rare cases you can't bore and stroke enough to get to 428. A standard bore 390 with a 428 crank is a 410. The 400 has different motor mounts and bellhousing than the FE.

First, heat the 390 to about 3000 degrees F.....

If you want to do a 429/460 in place of a 390...Go thru the Bronco Graveyard and they carry D&D hedders for the swap, buy the swap kit..there one of our sponsors !

The simple answer is NO. You can't get a 429CJ because it is in the 385 family of engines. And the 428CJ has a 4.13 bore and you can't punch a 390's 4.05 bore out that far without hitting a water jacket or having such thin cylinder walls that the engine won't like. That said I did turn an early 390, 375hp into a 406 (4.03" bore) but then those early high performance 390's had a ton of meat in the cylinder walls. There are very few if any late 390's that have that kind of metal around the cylinders.

To avoid confusing the poor guy, the 406 was 4.13 bore, same as the later 428, not 4.03. And yes, the later 390 blocks are generally not compatible with that kind of overbore.
I haven't seen anyone put an FE into the lowrider F250 4x4 frame, I put the 427 in my early '77 by switching the mount pedestals with a set from a '72, but my early '77 was still the old highrider frame. 429-460 is a pretty easy swap for your truck, will also match up with the tranny from your 400, and could work to your advantage if your state has a smog program, if you get a '79 or newer pickup 460. My 427 actually passed a sniffer test with a small cam in it, but the visual test Was a lot of fun while it lasted, though

Just a typo and a poor proff read. Of course the 406 had the 4.13" bore, just as the later 428 did.

Did it ever occur to anyone he might have meant 428CJ?

Yeah, and that's why so many included info about the 428. But the chances of turning his 390 in to a 428 of any kind are in the slim to none catagory.

Because he asked about going from a 390 to a 429CJ, and then asked about an FE block fitting into a '79 F250.
