ASE Engine Repair exam questions

Yesterday I took the ASE test for engine repair, and there were some questions from the exam that bothered me, because for one thing they're not even in my book as far as I can tell. These are all from what I could remember, since they don't let us take notes during testing.

Maybe someone here can help me with these? I would appreciate it.

1. Oil pressure can be affected by:
Stuck-open bypass valve near oil filter: how? I think this causes low or no oil pressure, but my book doesn't discuss it, only an open pressure relief valve.
Stuck-closed pressure relief valve: how? I think this causes very high pressure, enough to blow off the oil filter.

2. Very high oil temperature caused by faulty supercharger?

3. Faulty turbocharger can cause oil burning?

4. Can you clean aluminum engine blocks with sandpaper or abrasive discs? My book has a chapter on cleaning, but it never mentions these methods.

5. An engine won’t crank. Caused by:
Bent push rod???
Water in cylinder? I said yes

6. An engine cranks slowly. Caused by:
Improper valve lash?

7. An engine makes a “pop” sound when accelerating. Caused by:?? Can't remember if they listed camshaft timing/lobe condition and fouled spark plugs as possible causes.

8. Engine makes a knocking sound when idling, but the sound disappears when engine warms up. Caused by:
Piston wrist pin?
Excessive clearence between piston & cylinder wall?

9. Engine misfires, caused by:
Cracked spark plug insulation?
Uneven resistance in spark plug wires?

10. Crankshaft journal is ground by 0.010”. Which of the following is required to be undersized:
Bearing?
Connecting rod?
Connecting rod & bearing?

11. Can the wrong PCV valve cause a Diagnostic Trouble code to be set?

12. Worn camshaft lobes can have what affect on valve timing:
Retard? Advance?

13. Timing belt is removed & replaced, and now engine has a small vibration. Caused by:
Balance shaft out of synch?
Camshaft out of synch?
Wrong belt tensioner?
Wrong belt tension?

14. Induction noise is heard upon acceleration, caused by:
Air filter/housing not secured properly?
Intake ductwork loose?

15. Collapsed upper coolant hose caused by:
Bad radiator cap? (it didn't say this, but a bad vacuum valve in the radiator cap can cause it).

16. Radiator is cracked. Caused by: I forgot but they listed several engine performance conditions as possible causes.
????

17. Engine overheats at higher RPMs, but at idle the temperature returns to normal. Caused by:
Stuck-closed thermostat?

18. There is a vibration when vehicle is driven forward, but in reverse the vibration disappears. Caused by:
Faulty engine mounts?
Flywheel run-out?

19. After honing cylinders in an aluminum block, how do you wash it?
Hot soap & water?
Solvent?

20. Engine oil pressure at oil pump is 60 psi, but at the top of the engine it is only 5 psi. Caused by:
Sludged main oil gallery?

21. Engine oil pressure at cruising RPM is low, but at idle it returns to normal. Caused by:
Clogged oil sump?
Weak pressure relief valve?

22. A stethoscope can be used to pinpoint:
Water pump bearing noises?

23. Torque-Angle bolt tightening: I don’t remember question, but they asked about tightening sequence.

24. After a head was replaced on an engine, there is a rough vibration felt when idling. Caused by:
Tighting head bolts too tight?

25. Rotor measurements in oil pump, don’t remember it.

26. What is the best method of determining cylinder
bore wear?
Cylinder leak test
Cylinder power balance test
Compression test

27. An engine idles rough when first started but as it warms up (or higher RPMs?), it smooths out. Caused by:
Leaking fuel injector?
Vacuum leak?

Just joking, but #17 is because of the driver jumping on the gas pedal and #27 is the 5.4L 3V engine from Ford haha.

#8 piston slap common on Ford 4.6L truck engines. Does anybody know if new rings will fix this? or would a hone and new piston or overbore be the "correct" way to fix it. I drove my truck for 30,000 miles with it like that with no problems.
