Just got back and wish I could say I had a new truck. The salesman lied about it in his ad and on the phone to me. We drove 1 hour and pulled in and there it was! I was excited because it was a very nice well taken care of truck. It was like brand new inside and out. I knew this truck was going home with me. I popped the hood and my heart sank and I told the guy that we have a big problem here. I said this is NOT a 7.3L! He looked confused and I showed him the VIN code and other obvious differences. He then tried to convince me that it was just as good and he could sell me a warranty also. My wife and I said we were done and left. So I'm back to truck hunting once again.
What does a 7.3L badge look like and what are different about the mirrors that someone mentioned?
I'd make it easy on yourself and focus on '02 and older. Then you're guaranteed to have a 7.3. I wouldn't ignore an '03, but if you have a phone that can show pictures, for an '03 have a salesman snap a pic with their phone & send it to yours.

Door badge is chrome letters with a black background as shown above. For the early 99's, there is a badge on the front of the quarter panel rather than on the door that is says V8 in big letters. From late 99 to mid 2001, the badge was on the door and was black with chrome letters and red lines underneath it. From mid 2001 (early 2002 models) to the end of the 7.3 run (late 2002, early 03, 2003 model year) the badge was as pictured above, also on the door. If the truck is stock, the 99+ 7.3's always had a diagonal cut exhaust pipe, whereas the 6.0 had a straight cut exhaust pipe. The early early 2003 6.0's had no signals on their mirrors, so they can't be distinguished by mirrors alone. From fall of 2003 to 2007, the 6.0's had mirrors with lights on the outer perimeter. One more way to determine if it is a 6.0 is if you have an interior picture and the truck is a Lariat. The 6.0's had non perforated leather, while the 7.3's had center leather inserts that had tiny holes, or perforations in them. Those are the large differences that I can think of....
Good luck on the truck search!... Just know not to make an impulse decision!

Not all earlies had the fender badge instead of the door badge. Or not all late 99s had door badges. One of the two... LOL
Some earlies only came with the V8 on the front fender, some had door badges. I believe it depended on the trim package.
I should also add, you cannot truly identify the year of truck just by looking at badges. Badges are available on ebay and aftermarket so, they are easy to switch out. The PO of my truck removed my fender badges and many times I have considered purchasing a set of door badges for my truck. Just sayin

This truck was definitely a 6.0 but one thing I noticed was that the interior leather had tiny perforation holes in the center leather on the seats.
I have already found another truck to look at next week. It is a super clean low mileage (88K) 2002 F-350 Lariat,DRW,4X4,7.3L for sure, I already ran the VIN and saw the engine. I sure don't see any deals though on these 7.3L's. I have looked all evening and even saw a couple 2003's listed for $27K with about the same mileage. I see lots of them in our area right around the $20K mark but none lower unless high mileage.
Here's the one we're going to look at next week. They say it's like a new truck and only 88K miles. The dealer bought it at a sale so we have no history on it. He just took it and had the recall crankshaft sensor replaced just because they have had problems and this one had not been replaced yet. It has 6 new tires that they just installed. They want top dollar for it though!
Looks good. Is that an '01? See if you can get the VIN# and run an Oasis and a Carfax report on it. At least you'll be better armed and informed. Besides all the usual used vehicle checks, the first place I would inspect would be the compressor wheel. That can tell a lot right off the bat.
2002, I have the VIN already and will try and get a friend of mine to run the OASIS report. What is the compressor wheel that I need to check, please be detailed. I plan on going early Wed. morning with a friend to look at it. I will be prepared to drive it home if it checks out. Is there any possible way people can run miles back on these trucks? I'm just asking, you never know this day and time.
Pull the intake tube between the turbo & air cleaner box and inspect. It'll be in two parts -- the crankcase vent adapter is between the two halves, and because of the way it's vented there, you'll see oil. That's okay, but make sure it's not gritty dust/dirt. Check the wheel in the turbo for chips. Grab the wheel and make sure it doesn't move in & out. A little up/down, side-to-side is okay as long as it doesn't touch the housing.
If you don't mind a trip to Montana, you should take a look at the 02 dually strokersace has for sale... you'd be hard pressed to find one nicer.
