I have this 10.25 sterling, its 44.5 from perch to perch it will fit single axles, but what years? I ask because dont the newer trucks have the speedometer in the rear axle?

Somewhere in the early 90's they went to electronic speedos, and they used the sensor in the rearend. But there are earlier years that also had the sensor in the rearend with a mechanical speedo. The sensor was used for early abs systems.

The sterling came in trucks from 85 or 86 all the way to 97.

The RABS sensor just plugs into the top of the pumpkin, and is a Hall Effect type pickup.
I would think there is an 'exciter ring' magnet on the ring gear carrier in addition to the hole needed in the top of the differential.

Yes there is a reluctor on the ring, I guess it COULD be made to work if you got a ring gear with the reluctor and machined a hole in the housing then machine the flat surface of the housing at the new hole so the sensor sits flush and has the right clearance to the reluctor. BTW, it's not a hall effect sensor,(click the link) they have 3 wires and send 5v to one of them. The speed sensor in the rear is just a magnet wrapped with a wire that produces voltage when a piece of metal passes by(reluctor tooth) It's a little ac generator that usually puts out about .5v and the comp reads the frequency of the pulses to calculate vehicle speed. Only hall effect I can think of in automotive is a dist pickup in the mid 80's chrysler 4cyl engines

AutoZone.com | | Pick-Up Coil | PICK-UP COIL Funny, they call it a pickup coil. Reminds me of NAPA ignition modules say (or used to anyway) "modulator" on the box

I give up. What are you trying to do? If you want to put that rearend in a truck that had a mech speedo and the rabs, I would just bypass the rabs unit, if it hadn't been bypassed already. Most people do when it quits working and causes a mushy brake pedal.
