highest mileage ever?

The chevy stepside i recently rolled had 140,8xx miles on it. This truck never once let me down. The only parts that went bad in the entire life of the truck are the thermal actuator in the frontend which was recent (and is a very common problem). One time the fuel pump lost power, but it was a loose connection and nothing more. This truck ran a 4.3 and a 5 speed. Never used a drop of oil. Never complained. I really ran it hard for about 30k and I would say the engine is just getting started. On most oil changes I meticulously checked for any nastiness in the oil, and nothing..ever. This of course is only 140k, but I would say the enigne is ready for another 100k provided it isnt ran at 6500rpm constantly.

For comparisons sake, my 1982 trans am running a 350 (out of a chevy pickup) had about 235k on it when we took it out of the truck. The engine ran like a gem and was plenty powerful, but we rebuilt the entire thing for higher performance and got a good honest 300-325 rwhp (depending on the day and carb setup, we ran it on a chassis dyno several times). This car got another very HARD 30k miles, and it never skipped a beat. We did have some minor carb problems, but thats fairly expected from a quadrajet.

My fathers last chevy, a 1980 3/4 ton hd, was still running after close to 300k. This engine was fairly beat (started life as a state prison truck, later went on to be for roofing then we bought it) but never had any major problems. We had quadrajet problems (however this time it was due to the previous owners more or less hammering it on without it being lined up). The day we sold it, it did need a valve job. This truck was being driven about 300 miles a day for a time, so it was fairly expected. The truck still ran and still had plenty of power, however. This truck would tow a fully loaded boat and a bed full of drunks up a steep mountain grade (About 7500lbs total excluding the truck) going over 85mph (speedo was buried). Not trying to bash on you ford guys here just going by my own experiences.

The ford f-250 (302) I just recently bought has 77k on it, and it seems to run fairly well. I am not sure if it is the original engine but am willing to bet on it. Most guys I know blow their 302's at around 120k (rear main seal being the problem of most). I have seen plenty of higher mileage 302's, but not as many as the bigger fords and the SBC based engines. However, the 351 and 460 seem far more reliable. Don't even get started on the 300 six (they will probably run forever with enough gas and oil..just keep revs down).

The highest mileage ever recorded, was a 1956 mercedes benz. The owner bought it new in 1956, he lives in Germany. The benz is maintained by the dealer from start till present. The guy drove the benz to and from work everyday (150 mile round trip) for 40 years before he retired. Still uses the car everyday, drives it on vacations etc..... The car (as reported by the factory) has 1.4 million documented miles on the original engine. It currently holds the world record for the highest documented mileage of any vehicle with the original engine. The article was in a Mercedes Benz Promotional book. I wonder what kind of oil the guy uses?

My 1991 chevy suburban has 270000 + miles on it with the original engine & no major repairs on it. The tranny is a 700R4 & as I said before they are not even good as a boat anchor

*********************************************

Wasn't it just last year that an old Volvo surpassed 2 million miles.
I was sure it was a 1966-1800s (sports car)

They had it on the news of the world last year in the spring.

You're probably right, like I said it was a Mercedes promotional article touoting how great mercedes are. So take it at it's value when considering the source. I still would like to know what oil these "millions" of miles cars use?

I read about that guy in the record books. The benz that is. When asked what his secret was. He said he looks at the idiot lights every 15 seconds.

No idea what the milege is, the odometer has never worked for me, but the 66 Mercury in the sig is the best truck I've ever owned. My dad got it from the Mines in Onterio where is was no doubt abused (we replaced body panels interior and glass) He drove it for years after and he drove it to kill it (he's a bow tie guy). Until he put it on its side in the ditch doing some 4x4 thing with his buddy's. When the starter died he parked it. In comes me. I fixed it and got it tuned up. I have been abusing it since. I had water up to the dash in the river on an 4x4 excursion and when I pulled it out I had water flowing out of the dipstick. I replaced all oils in drivetrain etc. and this original 352 still runs like a top and is still going strong. They don't make em' like this anymore. Probably more steel in one fender than in some of the new cars/trucks these days.

At the way I am goin, I will have 150k plus on my truck before it is paid off, not much but if I can keep that 4.2L running for about 10 or 15 years, who knows, quite a few 100 thousand huh?

I wonder if that guy with the 1996 Dodge Ram with the Cummins engine has caught up with the Mercedes Benz yet? Last I checked he had passed the 1 million mile mark with original components. He delivers trailers all over the U.S. for a living.

If you averaged 45 miles per hour that would be 481- 24 hour days in the saddle, of a 6.9 yet. Sweet Jesus, YOU deserve the award.

It doesn't take all that much these days to break 300,000. The most I have ever put on a vehicle is around 150,000 and I wouldn't want to spend that much time in the same truck again. A few years ago the #1 and #2 cars on record were Mercedes Benzes. One had over 800,000 and the othe over a million.

I know my dad's 85 CHEVY 1500 had a slightly over half a million miles before the engine gave up. He had a 305 in it. Never any major engine repairs. Replaced oil every 4-5K.

Currently own an 85 ECONOLINE VAN with a 302 V-8. It has 225,835. It's been parked for nearly six months, but the last time it hit the road, it was running fine. All the mileage comes from highway, but it's still a great deal of miles, if you ask me.

Dad currently owns a 96 FORD F-350 PSD with 193,000. It's a diesel, so what can you expect?

Buddy of mine owns an 86 TOYOTA PICK-UP with 202,193. It has a 2.4L 4 cylinder. Everything original.

A guy who lives a few doors down from me owns a 93 CHEVY 1500, original owner and is a tad bit shy of 300,000. Has gone through a few altenators, couple batteries, breaks, set of tires, but that's about it. Uses nothing but sythenic oil. He said he is ready to buy his next CHEVY anytime now.
