I really thought about puttin a 7.3 in but all computer controlled and more hassle.all it takes for a cummins is a 12volt wire! and they do put a cummins in a 450 no bigger than a one ton except springs and ford also has an interest in cummins so why not! and boys it's already in the works found a whole truck with a 5 speed 3200.00 has 169,000 on and original owner so now come's the hard part convincing momma!!!! wish me luck gent's!

Dont worry about it not being a "ford" engine. As far as it goes the navistar 6.9/7.3/6.0/6.4 diesels used in fords are not "ford" engines either. Think of it like over the road trucks. You pick the chassis you want, then add the engine and trans of your choice.

FINALLY - someone who gets it!!!!!

Guys always give me grief about the cummins saying stuff like "built ford tough with dodge parts" to which I typically reply something like the following:

That cummins motor is NOT a dodge motor. Cummins makes motors and people/companies contract with them to put them in everything from industrial generators to boats. Do you go give the guys in the harbor grief for running a "Dodge" motor in their boat

Also - good point on the "Ford" diesels. Sometime the die hard guys saying "keep it ford" need to get a clue

So I'm not gonna rag about them to much, but I bought a 1978 f250 supercab 60's front and rear 4 speed all in all a good truck 32,000 on a NEW 400 ! well when I got it it ran like a turd! so I fixed all the dumb ass things he did and got it running pretty good. Well all was well till the other day started running like crap after about a 20 mile drive checked all the obvious things nothing! so here's my question 460 or 12 valve cummins I have a dove-a block and heads that I can build or I can buy a donor truck for the cummins I'm leaning toward the cummins for mileage and power I tow a 26 foot camper a lot ! I know the power of a 460 is awesome but the problem I've always had was in the trans the 435 has to much split between 3rd and 4th and they fall on there face on a pull ! I'd really like a 5speed and a cummins you guy's let me know what you think!!!!
Use the 460 but do it with a 4.3 stroke crank which works great in a truck. The 385 series Ford engines are some of the best engines ever made and this swap is the most common, so common many companies sell whats needed to do it easy. Plus the truck is worth more with the Ford engine. The site 460Ford.com is a good site with many expert builders of these engines. A 1988 thru 1997 fuel injected truck 460 might be a good choice to consider also, they commonly out last the rest of the truck.

you're simplest least expensive swap is going to be a 460. stick a five speed behind it and you'll get OK MPG's. I've got a 460 and NV4500 in my scout and i get 15 on the highway.

LOL, they are idiots. The ONLY reason the Dodge Ram was popular is because of that Cummins. The dodge truck is just a candy wrapper.

You sure about that? I see trucks with cummins swapped in going for more than ones with 460's. Of course it depends on the overall condition of the truck - but an apples to apples comparison with the only difference being 460 or cummins and my $$ is on the cummins truck bringing more cash all day long
