96 explorer stalls then wont start for hours

I just bought my 96 explorer 4x4 4.0L two weeks ago. Everythinh has been fine until the last few days. Here is whay happened.
First time - pulled into gas station (was really low under 1/8 tank) filled it up. Started for a second then died. Ended up leaving it there over night. Showed up the next morning it statred right up and drove home no problems. Drove it around with no problems until...

Second time - yesterday driving home from work (about 35 min into my drive) it just dies. No sputtering no hesitation before the stall just nothing. Almost like someone turned the key off on me. So I left it again. This morning I came back to it. It stated right up. Drove about a mile and it died again. Towed it home.

Anyone have any ideas? Could it be a fuel pump problem?

Any help is much apreciated. Thank you

That was my first thought. This can be checked by hooking up a fuel pressure gauge to see what is happening when the engine stalls/won't start.

Thanks I will check. But also I should include that when I turn the key to the on posistion. It does sound like the fuel pump primes for start.

If the pump is priming, then your problem could be the fuel pump regulator or the filter. How many miles are on it?
