Lightbulb valve lash / reinstalling cylinder head

1964 F250 4x4 262 inline 6 with T-98

finally getting everything buttoned up and will hopefully be starting the truck back up again this weekend.... in the service manual under installing a cylinder head, after you have everything installed it says to preform a preliminary lash adj. , now i have already done that, my question is.... do you re adjust after you fire it up? some people have said to tighten the rocker arms until there is no more play and then turn another 1/4 to 1/2 turn, others to start it up and back off each rocker till it makes chatter then tighten it till it is quiet and then 1/4 or 1/2 turn after that...... don't know if this applies to engines with solid tappets not hydraulic lifters???? this also doesnt sound right to me because in the service manual it says that the valve lash should be .019 hot/cold ..... wouldnt tightning down till there is no play be 0 lash?
anyways just want to be sure before i button up the valve cover and have to rip it back off to do more adjustment..... thanks!

262 has solid lifters....... you MUST set the lash with a feeler gauge or it won't run. They may make a little noise, just because they are solids........t/m

Yes, as long as you set the lash on each valve when it was fully closed.........you should be good to go. I'd run it for a while, see if any are overly noisy, if so pop the valve cover off and check them again.......t/m

I would run it up to temp and readjust. Also keep in mind they need to be adjusted every few thousand miles. I do them with my oil change on solid lifter cars..
