I have come across about 12 zf5 4x4 trannys in the past 2 days for under $400 but no 4x2 for under $1000 what would be the major hurdle in this conversion if a 4x4 was used. Drive shaft length? crossmember location? Driveline e-brake?( I like the drive line ebrake by the way? I did a search but missed the specifics I have a guy who will hold the tranny till morning so my research time is short.
If in the end it wil cost me the same please feel free to say so no ttrying to waste any ones time.
thanks
Matt

i had a tough time finding a 5 speed, i wanted a zf but there gone where i am. I was lucky to get a trans from a reputable place for $450 that looked like crap when i loaded it on my other truck, but so far its ok, best of luck, pm me if your in a jam and have no luck and i could get the ## of the yard
I dont know what year your truck/tranny? is to say as far as to movin the crossmember but if it does the holes are already in the frame for jus about any tranny swap 4x4 or otherwise, as far as complications, none other than you need a 4x4 transfer case an a 4x4 driveshaft to right length. Also determine about your clutch as far as was your previous tranny internal slave cylinder or external. My truck is like that with a borg warner granny low 4 speed, with borg warner 1356 transfer case, with a 4x4 driveshaft, with no front drive shaft an a 4x2 front axle, waiting for my front axle to go in. Drive it all the time.
So you would be using a 4wd tranny/t-case on a 2wd truck? If you aren't converting it to 4wd and just plan to have a t-case hanging under the truck, I think the driveshaft length would be your only other issue. If this is for the 95 in your sig, then you have no speedo cable to worry about.

The 4x4 ZF and the 4x2 ZFs are not interchangable without alot of work. To use the 4x4 transmission without a tcase bolted to it, you would need to completely disassemble the transmission to swap in a 4x2 tailshaft and housing. You could run the 4x4 trans w/ a transfer case and no front driveshaft, but then you would need to shorten your rear shaft. Really the cheapest and easiest option would be to hold out for another 4x2 version.

The 4x2 F-Superdutys of these years used a 4x4 ZF with a parking brake mounted to the tailshaft. This setup may work in your truck too, although you will mostly likely need a new or custom driveshaft.
The engine is on the other end of the transmission . ZF's website has parts lists, so you could compare and see for sure if the big block 4x4 rear case is the same as the small block 4x4 rear case. If they are the same, I don't see why the parking brake couldn't be bolted on a small block ZF.
