That is correct. I did take mine up to about 1700 rpm just to speed up the circulation. If you use the VC-9 do that run with the t-stat in. I took it for a 20 mile drive on highway for that phase and then took the t-stat out in case the VC-9 needs the temps to do a better job. No directions on the bottle. I talked to the diesel tech at the dealer.

Read around, I think you will need two of these.

VC-9 is a Motorcraft iron cleaner recommended by Ford for the 30,000 mile flushes. It is 26.50 + tx. per qt. at dealer and 2 qts needed. I have found no other subs. in my area and all 3 dealers wanted the same price. Some here say that with 30,000 mile flushes and a coolant filter that you don't need it. Personal preference I guess plus I wanted to try it. The internal passage that I could see with t-stat out was impressively clean after the flush. Don't know if it is strong enough to help the oil cooler but what the heck, I've spent 50 bucks on more worthless things than this in the past.

With all the new emissions requirements now and in the future, a diesel is not cheap to operate. You must either love them or need one to justify the cost of ownership. The worst thing you can do to them is short grocery store runs and lack of, not so cheap, maintenance.

I try to ride my Bike for the runs to post, small grocery runs and stuff like that. I love my truck driving long runs to FL and places like that. I'm hoping to make the run from FL to MI the day after Xmas and then back to NC on the 1st or 2nd of Jan. So, I think that just might qualify for a long run, eh?

I'm looking to do all the fluid changes before the end of this month along with the coolant bypass.

I don't mean to hi-jack this post but I've notice that my coolant has gone from a bright yellow in color to a brown color within the last 3K miles or so. This color change was rather sudden which is what concerns me the most. Up to this point I have been following Fords maintenance schedule closely and was considering doing the recommended 100K coolant change soon. But.....would anyone have an idea as whether this sudden color change could be an indication of head gasket failiure or just old tired coolant? I'm the original owner of the truck and it is an '05 F350 4X4 6.0L PS with babied 99,500 miles. As you can see because of the miles why I'm concerned about any potential head gasket failure. Is there a way to isolate head gasket failure vs old coolant, any type of lab test that can be done on the coolant? Other then this the engine runs great and there doesn't appear to be anything unusual with the engine oil (color ok and no loss between changes).

How important is it to use gold antifreeze? I already bought a case of the brand name stuff?

Can I use RO water instead of distilled?

Absolutely do not use anything other than the Motorcraft Gold (or Zerex G05). The distilled water is best, but RO water is OK to use.

BTW - lots of techs are telling us how important proper coolant maintenance is. I am convinced that the fluid should be flushed at 50k instead of 100k like the manual tells us!

Why is it important? and can I get the Zerex G05 somewhere other than a dealer?

And a coolant filter, really?

I'm sorry, brain fart. Premium gold good for 5 yrs./105,000 miles. I hit the 5 year mark and still far from 105,000 miles. Zerex GO-5 available at Napa for 10.49 a gal. concentrate or 50/50. same price

Napa sells the Zerex G05.

There are 3 or 4 different chemistries that can be used in coolants. They are not to be mixed or you can get reduced protection and even solids forming and plugging the oil cooler. Also, diesel engines require extra protection from cavitation based "erosion corrosion".

Is Zerex G05 the same thing as the Motorcraft Gold?
