ICP sensor- Idle "hunting"

The truck has always had a hunting and rough idle since i bought it. Never thought anything of it til i started reading some things on here about the ICP sensor. So i unplugged it today and the idle seemed to smooth out and hold steady with it unplugged. If i plug it back in, shut the truck of and then start it again the rough hunting idle is back. So does this mean the sensor is bad? No oil in the plug or anything.

Sounds like a bad sensor to me. If you leave the truck running and plug it back in and wait a few minutes, the PCM will recognize the ICP sensor again and the rough idle should return. When you first plug it back in, the PCM is still running off it's default tables while it tries to decide if the ICP is working. That's why the rough idle doesn't return as soon as you plug it back in.

I would certainly suspect the ICP sensor.

Here is a LINK to a page at Dieselsite.com addressing rough idle.

Edit: Your too quick for me Chris.

Makes sense. Is there any other way to tell it is for sure bad before i replace it? Those little things are pricey.

There's always a way, but the question is how practical is it? Typically we just use the unplug the sensor test and look for oil test as indicators. Maybe if there's someone near you with a 7.3 (or even 6.0) that you could swap sensors with for diagnostic purposes.

The only other thing to check would be the wires going to the ICP to make sure you're not getting a short there.

And to be on the safe side, you don't have a 10k mod, or some chip thing you bought off ebay that hooks into the ICP wires do you?

So a 6.0 ICP sensor will work?

Seems like from what I remember, the early 6.0 ICP sensors were the same. I doubt they changed much in the sensor when they moved it to the other head, but you should probably double check me on this before making a purchase.
